« Reply #1 on: January 06, 2005, 09:41:10 PM »
Yup, I'm surprised she can do anything at all on it, but not a total loss http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Can you first get her to download LSP fix
and save it to her desktop
Some of her infections when improperly removed can result in loss of Internet connection
This tool will help to restore it
She shouldn't need it, but she has it if she does

Have her Access her Add/Remove Programs and Remove if found

WebSearch Toolbar
WebSearch Tools
Search Assistant
Win-Tools Easy Installer

# Do not reboot until they have all been removed even if prompted.

# When you are uninstalling the last program you can then reboot when prompted.

Next:Go back to Add/Remove Programs and Remove if found
NCase
WindUpdates
Windows ControlAd
SurfSideKick 2
180 Solutions or 180 Search Assistant

Again Reboot if anything removed

Back in Add/Remove Programs Remove
Remove MyWebSearh, MyWay Speedbar, MySearch or anything similiar

The one that is hard to convince Ppls. to Remove, but needs to be done
Messenger Plus 3 or MSN Plus 3
When she installed it she got convinced to install the Sponsor, she can reinstall it at a later time, but choose NOT to include the SPONSOR
The Sponsor also includes Spyware called LOP, and she is also infected with it
Don't have her reinstall it at this time

Again Restart when removed

She needs to Download and install these 2 spyware Removers
There both free, no reason to be without them

Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates

Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer back to finish the cleaning process

Download and Install Spybot S&D 1.3
When Installing, please don't enable TEA TIMER, it's a great addon to Spybot but it can get in our way to do any manual fixes.. This can be enabled at a later time if you want it
After installation--Click the Update button on the left, in the window on the right click the
SEARCH FOR UPDATES button, Check and download all updates
Click the "Search and Destroy" Button
In the right window, click the
Check for Problems Let it complete it's scanning---Ensure to check and FIX everything in RED---they should be checked by default

Another great utility to help clean your temp folders, cookies, prefetch folder, etc...
Windows Cleanup
A small download, once it's installed
Open the program and click the CleanUP button, Let it complete the scan--Log off and back on when prompted or Restart the computer once again

RESTART your computer to finish the Cleaning process

If she has a problem downloading any of these tools, the first thing I like a user to do
with a log that has this many issues  is to try and Download a more secure browser
It's not a very big download
Mozilla Firefox

Also, if she has any problems running any of those tools have her do it in Safe mode
Restarting in between

One last request
Can I get her to redownload Hijackthis and save it to a Permanent folder
We're going to remove entries with it and it will make backups, we don't want the backups in the Temp folder, we will still need to clean it again
Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from CLICK HERE or CLICK HERE
Save it to that new folder

Have her do as much as she can from the above and then post back a Fresh hijackthis log

Once we get her to a Point that she can use IE again  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
She should also try and get some Latest Critical updates and Service Packs on her computer
She's way behind on them, it's important to keep up on them to keep the System secure

A lot of persons neglect this part

Here's a link for future reference
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downl...sp4/default.asp

Only Latest Critical Updates and Service Packs
Don't download the Recommended unless it's something she really needs or wants

Keep restarting the computer when prompted and go back to Windows updates until all the Critical updates are installed

Okay Peter, Looks like you convinced her to remove MSN PLUS 3, I think
I hope she did for now
I still see it in her log but I don't see a couple of entries that usually accompanies lop
I'm going to ask her to fix the Msn plus entry, if she won't for now
Sobeit  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Please get her to print this out or save to a Notepad file and leave it on the desktop for easy access

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
* Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

She is still running hijackthis from the Temporary directory
C:\Documents and Settings\Lauren\Local Settings\Temp\HijackThis.exe
Can you get her to move it to a permanent folder and run it from there, thanks
Remember, this is where the backups will be stored

Disconnect from the Internet

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools Section>>Open Process manager and Kill these processes
C:\WINNT\schk32.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\asyndlg.exe

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

If she could, RESTART the computer into SAFE MODE

Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
C:\WINNT\System32\ebtsl.dll <--this file
C:\WINNT\Helper101.dll
C:\WINNT\System32\piqjv.dll
C:\WINNT\System32\ebtslc.exe
C:\WINNT\schk32.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\piqjvc.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\asyndlg.exe

C:\Program Files\CSBB <--this folder
C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus <--folder, as mentioned, she can install it later WITHOUT THE SPONSOR http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Restart back to Normal mode

If she can find the time, she may also want to run a free online virus scan at Housecall's---Set to Autoclean
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/  <--She will have to use IE for this

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know of any problems

She may want to try some Windows updates at this time

Ok, i probably wont be able to get back too you until Sunday. But just a few things..when told about Messenger 3, she said she uses 6.2...so i told her to RE-DL it from the site and install that. Aside from that,  she said she didnt even have it..which is kinda strange..but i'll leave it for now. As for SAFE mode, i'll try to get her to do it. lol hopefully she will listen  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Hi Peter, I seen you online and reread what you said

She definitely has/had Messenger Plus 3 installed

Don't get her to Reinstall that if she doesn't want it
The MSN Messenger 6.2 is alright, she may have it still installed

Two different utilities
