task manager not working
« Reply #1 on: January 16, 2005, 04:13:18 PM »
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Restart your computer into SAFE MODE

Find and delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe <--file
Careful, DON'T delete svchost.exe in the System32 folder
Just the one in the Windows folder

If it won't delete, you may have to shut it down in the taskmanager
I realize that you can't access yours
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools Section>>Open Process Manager
Kill this process if still running
C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

Just that one in the Windows folder

Stay in safe mode

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
I'm going to ask you to remove red.clientapps, it looks safe but is related to RedSheriff spyware

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

O23 - Service: .NET Connection Service - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode

Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page

Can you do me a favor and navigate to this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AStart <--file, no extension it appears, such as .exe
Right click on it---left click properties--version
Let me know what you can find it's related too

Better yet
Can you go to this site please
Give the link time to load
http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
Use the Browse button at the top of that links page and navigate to this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AStart <--this file,
Right click on it and Select it
Use the Submit button on the site
Wait for the scan results and post them back here

I suggest that you also do an Online Virus scan at RAV's
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

When you access that link with Internet Explorer
click on the "To Continue without subsribing click here" link
It will load the activex and definition files

Ensure that all the top entries are checked
Autoclean--Inside Archives---Unpack Executables---Smart Scan

Then click the Scan my PC button
Let it completely finish scanning
Copy and Paste the results back here

Also post back a fresh hijackthis log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Thanks for your help.  I followed the instructions and the hijackthis file is below.

I couldn't find the c:\windows\systems32\Astart file (I searched).  I also tried an online virus scan and RAV's.  Didn't work though as it said I don't have activex on.  I double checked my IE security and it's set to Medium.

Some applications (word, ie) work.  Others, adobe, spybot don't.  It said that the application configuration isn't correct.

Here's the log file.

Thanks

Did you set Windows to Show Hidden Files and folders when searching for that file
Astart?

You might have, I'm just checking

Could you download this virus checker from Kapersky
Mwav.exe

Double click to Run it
Select all local drives, scan all files, press 'SCAN' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
In the Virus Log Information Pane
Left click and Highlight all the info in the Lower pane---  Use "CTRL  C" on your Keyboard to copy all found in the lower pane  and paste it in your next reply.

If prompted that a Virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning

Let's try this Paul

Download and Install this small download
Windows CleanUp! by StevenGould
Install for now but, Don't run a scan yet
This will clean all your temp folders, cookies, prefetch folder, etc....

Next:
 Download the Pocket Killbox
Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location.

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\AStart

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Double-click on KillBox.exe.
Paste this file into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box. Copy and paste the whole bolded line

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Gr03.dll

Check the radio button "Delete File On Reboot"
Also check "End Explorer Shell While Killing File"
Also check "Unregister .dll before deleting"

Click the RED X button and follow the prompts

Restart your computer into Safe mode

Open up CleanUp! and click the Cleanup button
Let if finish scanning for files, when it's done it will prompt you to log off
Simply restart back into Normal Mode

Back in windows make sure that this file is gone
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Gr03.dll

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log afterwards
Can you access the Task Manager now?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

« Reply #6 on: January 16, 2005, 09:24:44 PM »
Wow, didn't realize all the junk that CleanUp! got rid of. Also got rid of gr03.dll.

Unfortunately, no task manager.  I'll post some of the other systems.

The task bar is just a grey blob. No applications, no start menu. Many, not all, of the desktop icons have a jagged white border around them.

I get the following error message on many, again, not all applications.  "Application failed to start because the application configuration not correct"

I can't access any of the admin tools in the control panel.  I get an error message saying the registry is corrupted or they were installed incorrectly.

Here's the hijackthis log.

Thanks,

Can you try something for me

Download this fix from Doug Knox site
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip
Save it to desktop and UNZIP the contents
Double click on xp_exe_fix.reg and allow it to merge to the registry

Restart your computer afterwards
Any Change?

If you can't get that to work
Can you try this batch file

Or

try this method
Download this Zipped file http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_fileassoc.zip
UNZIP it to your desktop and Double click on the
xp_fileassoc.bat to run it
Follow the prompts

RESTART your computer afterwards

If you can't get that to run
Download and save to desktop UnHookExe.inf
from Symantec

Right-click the UnHookExec.inf file and click Install. (This is a small file. It does not display any notice or boxes when you run it.)

I'm just checking to see if the above will help, let me know

I couldn't run the first file, I got the application configuration error again.

I was able to run the xp_fileassoc.bat and the unhook.exe files.

Unfortunately, still have the same errors.

I want to see if there's anything else hiding

Download and unzip to a folder
Findit.zip

You will have to Right click that link and Copy Shortcut
Paste it to the IE address bar and hit GO

Open the folder and Double click to run find.bat

Ignore any File not found messages
It runs for a minute or longer, and produces a log
allow it to finish

Post back the whole contents of the log== Output.txt

Ran the program and it appeared to run ok but the output file wouldn't open.  Got the same Application configuration not correct.

I'm not ignoring you Paul
Trying to figure out what may of happened

It doesn't look like a Root kit infection
But let's check

Can you download
and save to desktop
Remv3.zip
You will have to Right click on that link and Copy ShortCut
Paste it to the IE address bar and hit GO

UNZIP the contents to a Folder
Important>>
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

In safe mode open the folder you unzipped the contents and Double click on
remv3.bat
Let it run until the dos window closes

RESTART back to Normal mode

Remv3.bat would of produced a log
Navigate to c:\log.txt and post the whole contents of this log, thanks

Can you also try running Find.bat in safe mode

Could you download Process Explorer by SysInternals
Unzip the Contents to it's own folder
open the Folder and Double click to run Process viewer
In the next window click on File>>Save as
Save the file to the desktop
Copy and paste that info back here

You may have to do a System file checker on your computer or run a Repair Installation, but let's try the above
