My Problems seems similar...but it isn't
« on: January 19, 2005, 08:43:33 PM »
Somehow i've succumb to the issue of my .exe files no longer opening.  While this may seem like a simple fix in the registry i cannot even open regedit.  I went into safemode and ran CP and edited the registry...this did not help.  I did the "%1"%* thing...i wish it had helped.  there is seemingly no way for me to solve this problem.  The main issue being that i cannot open anything that i download.  Therefor i have no hijackthis logs, i have no access to antivirus programs.  Heck i can't even run an online virus scan b/c my browser doesn't have the necessary plugins and i can't dl them.  Right now i'm pulling out my hair, wanting to throw a brick through someones window.  I do still have Access to AVG, but it really doesn't seem to be helping.  Please won't anyone save me...

Also i'm running XP-Pro SP1

Make sure you signed in with Administrative privileges

Try download this registry fix
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

Save it and UNZIP it to your desktop
Double click on xp_exe_fix.reg and Allow it to merge to the registry

Restart your computer and try sending me a Hijackthis log

Or

try this method
Download this Zipped file http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_fileassoc.zip
UNZIP it to your desktop and Double click on the
xp_fileassoc.bat to run it
Follow the prompts

RESTART your computer afterwards

OR
Download and save to desktop UnHookExe.inf
from Symantec

Right-click the UnHookExec.inf file and click Install. (This is a small file. It does not display any notice or boxes when you run it.)

I suggest that you also do an Online Virus scan at RAV's
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

When you access that link with Internet Explorer
click on the "To Continue without subsribing click here" link
It will load the activex and definition files

Ensure that all the top entries are checked
Autoclean--Inside Archives---Unpack Executables---Smart Scan

Then click the Scan my PC button
Let it completely finish scanning
Copy and Paste the results back here

or try one at one of these 2 links, set to Autoclean if possible
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm

You will have to Use Internet Explorer to run them for best results

Or try saving this Downloadable virus scanner
Mwav.exe

Double click to Run it
Select all local drives, scan all files, press 'SCAN' and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
In the Virus Log Information Pane
Left click and Highlight all the info in the Lower pane---  Use "CTRL  C" on your Keyboard to copy all found in the lower pane  and paste it in your next reply.

If prompted that a Virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning
Try running it in safe mode or any of the other fixes besides the Online Virus scanners

Remember to Right click on and click the Install on the Unhookexe.inf

I really really wish those solutionts helped me but they almost all rely on me downloading and installing something...that really is not an option.  I tred running the "unhookexec" but this does not work either.  When i try to run a prompt comes up saying that windows does not recognixe the file format.  I can either pick an app or go online...

For these reasons...my problem is like something similar....but it just isn't it.

Remember, you don't double click to run Unhookexec.inf

You have to Right click on it and choose Install
