Search For... Hijack
« on: January 23, 2005, 06:59:17 PM »
Has anyone had trouble with "Search For..."

This takes over my main page when I start internet explorer. Also I can't log on to ebay because this page keeps poping up.

I keep trying to remove all files that look like they might be giving me trouble like:

"R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank"

As seen below in my log file. They just keep coming back. I ran Adaware, spybot and mcAfee.

Can you Download DLLCompare

Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com
Default settings should work---C:\Windows\System32 directory
Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long

Click the Compare button to start the next process. This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post it back here

We have identified the culprit Flash
A couple tools to help get rid of this infection

-Download and save to desktop this Removal tool developed by Symantec

also

Download and save to desktop The STANDALONE version of CWShredder.exe

Please print this out or save to a Notepad file on your desktop for easy access
START>>RUN>>type in notepad
hit OK

Disconnect from the Internet (Close down all browser windows) and all unnecessary programs running in the background

Double-click the FxAgentB removal tool by Symantec to run it.
The program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later.
RESTART your computer when Done

Double click to open CWShredder, Click Only the FIX button, let it fix all problems, when the scan is completed>> this won't take long
RESTART your computer again

Open Ad-Aware and Check for Updates, if any download them

Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer again to  finish the cleaning process

When your back in Windows
Can you update your version of Hijackthis please
Open Hijackthis>>Config>>Misc tools>>Check for Updates Online
Post back with a Fresh log from Hijackthis 1.99

If for some reason it won't update you can download the newest version from my signature below
Save it to your C:\Documents and Settings\Marc\Desktop\hijackthis
Allow it to overwrite your version
Do a SCAN and Save a Log file---Save the log----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here----Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

and post the FxAgentB.log from Symantec's removal tool
Could you also run another scan with DLLCompare and make another log and post that also

Can you also post the log from Symantec's removal tool and a new DLLCompare log

Could you also
go to this site please
Give the link time to load
http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
Use the Browse button at the top of that links page and navigate to this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wkind.dll<--this file
Right click on it and Select it
Use the Submit button on the site
Wait for the scan results and post them back here

You may have to Set Windows to show hidden files and folders

Search For... Hijack
« Reply #6 on: March 25, 2005, 08:19:38 PM »
this "Search For..." hijack is really difficult to clean from the pc. i still couldn't do it. i'll try to follow these steps when i get to the infected pc.

i remember that suddenly i got an .EXE running on my pc. it was the "On-Line.exe". it caused an internet explorer error, windows xp called that internet explorer option to send a report of the error....

they did a good hijack system hehe, beucase i tried everything....spybot, ad-aware, HijackThis, CWShredder, xoftspy, microsoft anti-spyware......they recognize and remove it, but at the same time, the hijack re-instals itself

i recommend you to install spywareblaster, it helps to prevent something like that
