multiple hijackers! Can someone please help?
« on: February 02, 2005, 09:25:12 PM »
Hi!
I am new to the forum, and my computer has completely been overrun with adware / spyware / etc.  I have been trying to fix the problem for the past couple of days, to no avail.  I am above the average user with tech info, but I am no system administrator (I do graphic design and web development), so bear with me!

Here's the relevant background info - I run windows 2000 pro, was using IE 6 (now mozilla firefox because IE seems to be jacking everything up!), just upgraded service packs, which I think was a mistake on my part, had microsoft antispyware installed for a couple of weeks, but uninstalled because it wasn't catching anything, and have run adware personal, spysweeper, hijackthis, and mwav in the past 12 hours, but nothing has helped!  Well, alot of the spywares were deleted, but of course some of them keep coming back as expected!  One of the biggies is loadingwebsite.com.  Also, anytime I open IE, I get the following: Invalid Syntax error in the title bar, and cursors will not work in any web page form fields - for example, I can type a url in the address bar in google, but am unable to type anything in the search bar.

I am ready to completely wipe out my box and reinstall everything, OS included, but if someone has an idea of what's going on, I'm definetely open to trying anything at this point!  Oh, and Outlook won't let me open any emails, I keep getting an error message.  Same thing with my control panel (get some runtime script error, I think), and some other strange windows behavior.

So, here's my hjt log:  (One more thing - I already have a folder for hjt under C:\HJT - I saw it on another topic...

You may have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT:  Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Please don't restart your computer after you've posted the log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

multiple hijackers! Can someone please help?
« Reply #3 on: February 02, 2005, 09:54:51 PM »
Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT:  Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

After your back in Windows and post your logs, don't try and restart the computer again
until I get a chance to post some final cleanup measures

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Hi Arossi, good work so far
I'm not sure if you seen me mention it in my last post , but I need to see a fresh hijackthis log  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

I have to step out for a bit, if you can not try and restart your computer until I can supply some final fixes that would be great

But please supply a fresh hijackthis log, thanks

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Disable SpySweeper's realtime monitoring protection and leave it disabled until we have you totally clean
Disable it and set it not to load at startup for now. You can re-enable it later

I'm going to ask you to Remove SpyKiller and BestPopupKiller
Both associated programs and Spykiller is  inadequate and on the Rogue list, if you didn't pay for them, let's remove them>>>Both are Swanksoft products
I'll tell you when to uninstall them
More info here
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies,, etc...
Windows Cleanup
Install it for now, but don't run a scan yet

Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and Folders
* Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

You may want to Print the rest of this out or save to a Notepad file on the desktop
Please Close down all browser windows, including this one

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools Section>>Open Process manager
Kill these processes if still running
C:\WINNT\system32\msupd5.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\sysmonnt.exe

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

« Reply #10 on: February 03, 2005, 10:09:04 AM »
hi guestolo!

ok, there were a few things that i could not do... 1. on the first step, hjt would not let me remove the majority of the 01 entries.  i think all of the entried defined as 01 - hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch were unable to be removed.  2.  when doing the cleanup in safemode, there were 1-2 files in use (although i did not have anything running) that could not be deleted.  i tried it twice, to no avail!  3.  once i got to spybot s&d, the following files could not be removed, either - IGetNet, Common Hijacker, and a handful of files named similarily to this one -
CoolWWWSearch.Loudbot (all had the CoolWWWSearch.somenamehere).

So, my new hjt is as follows:

hi!

ok... great news (i think!)

i ran a scan with hjt in safe mode, and all of the 01 - hosts: 69.20.16.183... were gone!  the only one present was the 02 - BHO..... so i fixed that one.

AND, there were no problems to fix in CWShredder!

AND, no immediate threats found in Spybot, either.

So, here's the fresh hjt log:

multiple hijackers! Can someone please help?

Are you having troubles with Stopzilla
O2 - BHO: STOPzilla Browser Helper Object - {E3215F20-3212-11D6-9F8B-00D0B743919D} - (no file)
The "No file" may indicate that you may want to uninstall it and reinstall it you prefer to keep it>>>Can you disable Stopzillas realtime spyware protection if you use it
If you uninstall it don't reinstall it yet
It may be interfering with the removal of that last BHO missing

That one BHO returned
Can you try something for me
Could you please go to this link
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ and scroll down to
Registry Search Tool
Download,UNZIP and run "RegSrch.vbs" >>Allow this to run, even if prompted from your AV
Copy and paste this in the dialog box:
{D90704AE-0EAC-ACA9-D27A-CB27F7314341}

Hit OK
After a while a prompt will come up.(About 10 seconds) Click OK to write the results to wordpad or notepad and post them

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free!

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

there were no instances of that registry found.

so, do you think that i am clean, now?  should my ie be working fine?

i will follow, to a T, the protection set up you outlined.  i so appreciate your help - it's nice to know that there are computer geniuses out there using their knowledge for good, as opposed to creating malicious viruses and spywares!

i tried to uninstall stopzilla, but it won't let me.  i will be calling them to get it off my box, and hopefully get a refund!

if you ever need any graphic design services, please let me know!  i'd be glad to help you, free of charge, considering you just saved me a ton of headache in wiping out my machine!

thanks again, and please let me know if i need to do anything else!

Hold off Arossi

Let's try this
Can you Enter your task manager and end task on this please
szntsvc.exe

Then try uninstalling Stopzilla
You should be able to reinstall it later

Or try in safe mode, not sure if it will work in safe mode but try it
While your in safe mode

Can you open Spybot
Click on Mode at the top>>>Advanced mode>>YES

Click on Tools>>>BHO's
Highlight this string
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D90704AE-0EAC-ACA9-D27A-CB27F7314341} - (no file)

Click Remove

As mentioned, it could just be Stopzilla interfering with the removal

That one BHO is just a leftover with no file doing no harm, but this is still a problem in many logs trying to remove these leftover BHO's
The first cause is some type of Security protection prohibiting the removal
Right now I could only think that it is Stopzilla's security getting in our way

Hold tight
Can you go to START>>>RUN>>type in services.msc
Hit OK

In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- STOPzilla Local Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
from Automatic

Then try the above

ok, so i stop service and changed automatic to disabled, and now i don't find szntsvc.exe in my processes.  however, i still cannot uninstall stopzilla - actually, the change/remove button is greyed out... should i continue and go into safe mode and continue your directions?
