FixIstbar.exe from Symantecs
Don't run it yet

Next:
Download and UNZIP to a folder Hoster by Toadbee
We'll need this later

Print the rest of this out or save to a Notepad file on your Desktop
Also know how to start in Safe mode, I've posted a link how to below, if your unsure

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Disconnect from the Internet
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools>>Open Process Manager
Kill these processes

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mssams.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\npfw32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\navprotect.exe <--this is not legit

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mssams.exe <--file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\npfw32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\navprotect.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fkots32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jvokr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\spvfekdr.exe
spoolvse.exe <--exact name, do a search for it

C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service <--this folder
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc<--folder

Do a disk cleanup>>ClicK Start>>run>>type in
cleanmgr
hit OK

Open Hoster and click the RESTORE ORIGINAL HOSTS

Stay in safe mode and run the FixIstbar Removal tool


Restart back to Normal mode afterwards

Run an Online Virus scan at Trend Micro's >>> Set to Autoclean
Whatever it can't clean delete manually

Post back a fresh hijackthis log afterwards

we are doing a search for the files that you told us to delete to see if they are still on the computer.  It seems to search this file for a while is it a large file or hung up?  com/pcdrinc/engine/v4/events.

Can't you just manually look for those files
I gave you the locations

Right click the START button
Left click Explorer

spoolvse.exe
That one, may not exist, try looking in your C:Windows folder
or your System32 folder
Remember, only the exact name

When do I turn on system restore?

Right now!
I never asked you to turn it off, I leave this till the end if possible
If anything goes wrong on your side at least System Restore may help get you back to a former state
I usually have the user disable it after their clean........

This is optional for you to have running, many consider it spyware as it always checking back home

Enter your Task Manager and End process on
BackWeb-137903.exe
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

Right click and Rename it to BackWeb-137903.ex_

Have hijackthis fix this entry

Restart your computer, don't delete the backup that Hijackthis made until your happy with the way everything is running

You can go back and Hide Hidden files and folders afterwards

How's everything running?

the computer is running great! but upon starting we get the splash screen with hp invent press f1 to enter setup ect.  Then it continues to another screen that gives you two choices to continue with windows xp or with the recovery console.  You have 2 seconds to choose then it will default to windows xp. and continue to boot normally.  Is there any way to bypass this screen?  I assume it was put on there when we did a recovery.  Also, Norton anti-virus will not do a live update.
