How can I delete...
« on: August 10, 2001, 03:11:11 PM »
Here\'s the thing:
Ever since i installed Win2k Pro, or shortly thereafter, I\'ve had a directory in c:program files called \"microsoft frontpage\"

Now, that\'s fine and dandy, except for 2 things: (1) I\'ve never had FP installed on this computer, and (2) if i HAD, it would have been capitalized.

There\'s also c:program filesmicrosoft fronpageversion3.0 and c:program filesmicrosoft fronpageversion3.0bin

Now, when I try to delete these, it says that it cannot delete bin, there\'s been a sharing violation, and that i should make sure the source or the destination isn\'t in use.

There\'s nothing in these directories.  0 files, 0 bytes.  What\'s going on?

I\'ve booted to a safe mode command prompt and tried to delete them, which seemed to work for a little while (i was able to delete bin and version3.0), but then it said that microsoft frontpage didn\'t exist, so i couldn\'t delete it.  I could still cd into it though.  I don\'t understand!

How can I delete these directories?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is probably stupid but you did type \"deltree\" right?  That should destroy the directory and all files contained within.  You probably already knew that though....

Also, when you tried to delete them from windows, did you do a shift+delete or just delete to recycle bin?  Sometimes, you may be unable to shift+delete to bypass the recycle bin but if you just move the directory to the recycle bin it may allow it.  Then you can empty the recycle bin from the command prompt.

Finally, this reminds me of a problem i had back in the day with a game called tank wars.  It installed a file called ------.--- into it\'s directory which I could not delete manually or even by deltree.  I can\'t remember if i ever found a way to delete it but if I do, i\'ll post back....

Actually, yah, I did try deltree, both from the regular command prompt, and the safe mode command prompt.  Win2k apparently doesn\'t have deltree (deltree was the first thing i attempted.  Gawd how i love deltree).  It says
\"\'deltree\' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.\"
Also, I never use shift+delete, didn\'t even know I could do that. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
I always just drag to the recycling bin, or use the delete key.
But yeah, it\'s irking me.  I mean, i\'ve never installed stuff there, so it\'s obviously like... virus-like, or there\'s weird hard drive [censored] going on, or something.
hmmmm.... thanks for the ideas though.

You can either delete de folders from winme(win98) if you have a dual boot system or from dos with a winme setup disk (win98)  , but the next time you restart w2k , the folders will be restituted to their original place because they are used by msinfo.exe.
The only way to delete them is in the registry , but what\'s the use I do not see the sense of deleting them .

They\'re empty folders that don\'t belong there.
In win2k, there\'s no msinfo, just msinfo32, and like, why would it be using empty folders, when it\'s not even running?

That makes no sense.

I mean msinfo in the registry .Look for frontpage , and you\'ll find it under msinfo .I know the program is msinfo32 .
I do not know what will happen if you delete the key frontpage it in the registry , perhaps then you will be able to delete the folders on your hd

First, why are you so worried about this folder?  It is a part of EVERY win98, winME, win2k installation.  Probably winxp, too.  It takes up very little room and does not do anything malicious.
