Can't network 2 XP boxes
« on: February 19, 2005, 07:44:49 AM »
To anyone that can help:

I've got a Wireless network consisting of 2 computers (XP Pro and XP Home editions).  I have run the Networking wizard on both and have shared a folder on both.

When I go to My Network Places (on the Home edition) all I see is the Home edition's own shared folder, nothing from the Pro box.  When I'm sitting at the Pro box, I don't see anything in My Network Places at all.

These 2 computers are Wirelessly networked with a LinkSys router.  The router has absolutely zero filtering or firewalling active.  I have no 3rd party software firewalls on either computer.  I have disabled Windows XP's own firewall from both Wireless connections.

Both computers are on a 192.168.1.x 255.255.255.0 subnet.  I can successfully ping the Pro box from the Home, and vice versa, so there IS at least *some* communication between the two boxes.

I have confirmed NetBIOS over TCP is active on each box and the ComputerBrowser service is started on each as well.  When I type in net view from the command prompt, all I see listed is the Home edition computer.

This one is starting to drive me nuts.  All I want to do is move some damn files over from the Pro box to the Home box.  lol.  Please, any help would be much appreciated.

No comments in 2 weeks?  No suggestions?  Wow, you guys are on the ball.  Regular bunch of technology whizzes I've stumbled across here.

Strange bunch I agree... ensure that the 2 machines are in the same workgroup.
Also, try (from the run command) using \\%computer name\%share name% to access the shares, instead of looking for them

Try ensuring the domains as above post suggests, also I would suggest checking your router. A simple ping of the router should suffice.

If this still yeilds 0 results I would suggest dispensing with the Wizard crap and manually setting up your network. it isn't as much work as it sounds, this is the only way to be sure that the IP's subnets and domain are all correct. You also never specified whether or not you had enabled file sharing between them. Make sure you have or you will see nothing. I think on the one you said you were able to see the shared folder so this one has to have a networked share.

On my home network I run 5 pcs and a linux box as my router. I have 1 linux, 1 XP pro, 1 win98, and 2 2k pro, all can see each other and share certain folders between each other. Note I didn't have to sacrifice anything to a Pagan god in order to get my network up and running, a little reading and some snooping and I think you can solve the issue.
