SmartSecutity Hijacker gone, but...
« on: March 20, 2005, 03:20:57 PM »
Hi, I got the "smartsecutity desktop hijack" virus today. I found this page, and the "smart-security.info/recover" link. After changing the reg.files manually and running Ad-Aware, CCleaner, SpySweeper, Spybot an AVG Antivirus, it stopped generating new files, but... the Desktop tab in DisplayProperties is still locked and all my files on the desktop is gone... Any ideas?

Thanks from Chris

Can you post a Hijackthis log
Here's How

Also
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Code box to notepad
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS

Name the file as Export.bat

Save this file on the desktop
Code: [Select]
regedit /e Export.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
Double click on Export.bat and a file should be placed on the desktop called
Export.reg
Right click on Export.reg and select EDIT
Copy and paste back the findings

« Reply #3 on: March 22, 2005, 01:22:22 AM »
Please make a Permanent folder for Hijackthis as per instructions
Don't run it from your temp folder
If your having troubles saving the zipped file and unzipping it you can get the .exe version from my signature below

After that is done

Let's create a new restore point if you can
Go to START>>All programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Name it and click create

Download and save to folder fix.zip
Choose Save to Disk rather than Open
~Removed attachment~
UNZIP fix.reg  to the same folder
We'll need this later

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Print the rest of this out or save too a Notepad file for reference

RESTART the computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key on the keyboard as the system is restarting

Log in with the user having problems with desktop

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://new-search.net/search.php?v=6&aff=921618
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://new-search.net/index.php?v=6&aff=921618

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Look for and delete these files if found
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\NTDDETECT.DAT <-file

Look for these next ones too, delete files in bold if found

•C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html '
-C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html
•C:\WINDOWS\SSICO.ICO
•C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
•C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

Note* <current user>= user name having a problem with the desktop issue

Stay in safe mode
Double click on fix.reg and allow to merge to the registry

Restart back to Normal mode

See if you can access
 your Control Panel
> Display.
Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button.
Click on the "Web" tab.
Uncheck everything

Log off and back on again

Post back with a fresh Hijackthis log and let me know how things are running

First of all, thanks for helping...  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

ok, now I have done as instructed above. The Display Properties is now unlocked  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> The only problem left is that my files on the desktop from before the virusinfection is still gone (but I can see them in SafeMode...)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe

This line in the HijackThis log is still there after "fixing it" with HijackThis...

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntddetect.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart your computer

Are you saying you have no Icons on your desktop?
Which ones are you missing?

I am having a similar problem... Some how I got this SmartSecurity on my computer.  I deleted the desktop.html, but I can't change desktop settings--they are greyed out.

I can post my HijackThis log if that will help...

darkchilde, usually I ask that you register to the forum
I you could, please do

If not, I believe I have a work around for this desktop issue
Please post your hijackthis log

Could you also do the following
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Code box to notepad
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS

Name the file as Export.bat

Save this file to a folder
Code: [Select]
regedit /e Export.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
Double click on Export.bat and a file should be placed in the same folder called
Export.reg
Right click on Export.reg and select EDIT
Copy and paste back the findings
