Hit with some kind of trojan prob
« on: March 20, 2005, 07:46:06 PM »
Was hit with a virus the other day, that norton, avg, and trojanhunter can't get rid of. It's called VBS.Redlof.A.
I think it's spread wide. I can't access the internet or open folders unless I'm in safe mode + network setting.
I constantly get the homepage of: about:blank.

I ran hijackthis, the current homepage presented on it, is not "about:blank" because i'm ran hijackthis in safe mode where I could be on my regular homepage. and here's the log:

===Download and save to Desktop Cwsserviceremove.zip
[attachment=76:attachment]
Unzip the contents too desktop so you will now have Cwsserviceremove.reg on your desktop, we'll need this later

===Download to desktop About:Buster.zip
by RubbeR Ducky
Unzip the contents to desktop, a folder will be placed on your desktop
Open it and run About:buster.exe
Click the Update Button and check for updates, if any, download them
Then close it for now, we'll need this later

===Please open and empty Notepad file
START>>RUN>>type in notepad
Hit OK
Save the rest of these instructions to that empty notepad file and place it on your Desktop for easy Access

===Important

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

===Next: Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
and hit Enter
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Network Security Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

===Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools Section>>Open "Delete an NT Service"
Copy and Paste the next entry in bold to the blank box and hit OK

Network Security Service

Do the same for this service name

11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

===Stay in safe mode and navigate to these files or folders and delete them if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieda.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.dll <-file
C:\WINDOWS\apiwg.exe <-file

Again, In safe mode
Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

Unable to connect to the internet while in normal mode. However, everything else is in working order. No more search engine pop up, it just goes to an unable to connect page.

Also, I don't have spybot 1.3 installed.

You didn't supply the Hosts file that I asked for

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\mewgk.dll/sp.html#10001

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FA83F041-A1A7-96E9-9A0F-5BFEC18C399D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\apiir32.dll (file missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ieda.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieda.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart into Normal mode

I would also like to see a fresh log from Hijackthis from a scan in Normal modes

Also, your running 2 Anti-Virus software on your computer, this can cause system instabilities and conflicts, decide which one you prefer and uninstall the other completely

I would suspect that maybe Norton's may be getting in the way of connections in Normal mode, you may have to temporarily disable the Firewall
If you can connect in Safe mode and not normal that would be the first place to look

« Reply #6 on: March 21, 2005, 09:38:41 PM »
This is what showed up when I did the open file hosts manager and open in notepad:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost

Why is it only showing a copyright. I have hijackthis in D: drive, as to not have C: interfere with it. Here is the latest log from Safe Mode, and then Normal Mode. Also, they options you mentioned to check off and fix, are no longer present because I checked and fixed them previously:

That's what a typical Host's file looks like
Yours looks good

If you have No Internet in Normal mode but can connect in safe mode still leads me to suspect that this is a Firewall issue now
Do you have Nortons firewall installed and enabled?
Is the XP firewall enabled?

Also try temporarily disabling TrojanGuard, you should be able to shut it down by right clicking the Icon by the clock or in Task Manager

I tried disabling the Windows Firewall and connecting, didn't work
Disabling Norton's firewall, didn't work.
Both, didn't work.
TrojanHunter disable, didn't work.
All 3, no dice.

Also, ever since this virus had hit, Norton anti and internet security would not appear in the toolbar on start ups. And the autoprotect turns off, and the email scan has error.

It says norton is on "Attention"

I would first run a SpywareChecker on your computer

Here's a good one
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version or the paid version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

If your still having Norton problems later, my bet would be you should Uninstall it and reinstall it
I don't know what version your running
But check Symantec's site for proper uninstallation and reinstallation procedures
If it's not fully removed you could still end up with problems

EDIT>>take a look at this link, I'm not sure what version Of Norton Intenet Security your using, I would venture an uninstall>>reinstall would work
Symantec support

Make sure you also run Ad-Aware through your system

I've run adaware on my comp until everything was clear on it's report. However, I can't uninstall Norton because it's saying that my "admin" account doesnt have the previlege to uninstall norton.

wtf.

Not only that, I tried to bring back the original Administrator user, but I don't know how to restore that(for normol mode, it's available in safe). I didn't think that made a big deal, because my normal user name has all the administration previleges as the original, or so I thought.

So now I'm stuck with this dilema of not being able to uninstall norton. And if I log into the "old" admin user being in safe mode(it seems to appear along with my regular admin), i can't uninstall unless in safe mode anyway.

As for that, everything is still in working order(minus the not being able to access the internet in normal mode).

It was norton av 2004 and internet security 2004. Both are uninstalled, however, i still cannot connect to the internet in normal mode. Only safe mode.

This seems to be the only problem i have left.

Also, the reinstall of norton av, wouldnt work. And i don't want to pay for norton internet security, cause it let me down anyway. I'd rather have something else that will allow me to connect to the net in normal mode.

If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
FYI>>IE-Spyad works also with Windows XP SP2

Are you planning on remaining with Norton's or do you need want alternatives too
Norton's Anti-Virus and Firewall
I have links to free versions

Thanks for the offer on the donation

The link to the Donation is in my signature
Or try this
http://www.thetechguide.com/
Directs you too the main page
Josetann, the Administrator of the site would appreciate it
You could either donate to the site from that link
And click the Donate button on the right hand side of the page
Please let Admin know if you would like to Donate to the site or
the CSI Roatan orphanage<<Accepting donations until April 8, I believe
It's a worthy cause, I donated myself
Any help is very much appreciated

Yeah I'd like to have Norton back.

When I clicked on the donate link on the homepage I got this:

I've only had paypal for about near 2 weeks, and I use it with my credit card and everything works fine. But when I click on that link, i get that message.
Is the donation here not compatible with credit card orders of paypal?

Totally worth the donation, cause my comp could;ve been in more crucial danger if i didn't get the help here. And wouldve probably had to shell out money to fix the problems.

Thanks for everything. I appreciated the help.
