Can't connect to Internet
« on: March 21, 2005, 03:22:04 AM »
Ok, new computer running XP Home built in Intel NIC. and I disabled the built-in firewall.

I ran through Windows network setup wizard and new connection wizard. I tried running though my 3com Hub. Didn't work so I reset things up to run straight from my Cable modem to my new computer. Still doesn't work... I checked with my ISP and I'm allowed 2 IP's and I don't have to register the mac address... so I broke down and used the ISP's internet set up CD did that rebooted same thing... no internet and I couldn't view my other computer on the network. So I disabled the onboard NIC and installed my 3com generic NIC from my other computer which I know works... jumped through all the hoops again and nothing same problem. I've been looking around on the internet for a simular problem nothing really matches up but I tryied changing NodeType to 1 from 8 same result, nothing. Enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP no change. Somewere along the line my Network started to work. I can access files both ways on both computers however my main goal is to get Internet to the new computer and it's still not working. I don't know what I'm missing I thought I covered everything any help would be great this is what my ipconfig /all says

Windows IP Config.

Host name... Computer
Primary DNS Suffix... (blank)
Node Type... Broadcast (tried Hybrid)
IP Routing Enabled... No
WINS Proxy Enabled... No
DNS Suffix Search List... (doesn't even show up on list as blank where as my other computer has it vs.ISP.net)

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix... (is listed but blank where as my other computer has vs.ISP.net)
Description... (My NIC)
Physical Address... (my MAC)
Dhcp enabled... Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled... Yes
Autoconfigureation IP Address... 169.254.160.16
Subnet mask... 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway... (blank)

After I renew it says... An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection: unable to contact your DHCP server request timed out.

Any help would be great thank you.

I don't want to get too involved in the connections and networking areas of the computer
Spyware and viruses takes up enough of my time

I would first try a small program to repair your winsock settings
If your using Windows Xp
Try Winsock Fix XP
from here
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Save to desktop and then run the fix with all other windows closed, including this one

Restart your computer afterwards

I too just stumbled into this puzzling problem. Did a ritual spyware/adware purge of my computer and found I could register LAN connection, but can't ping my router or get an IP from dhcp (returns a request timed out error). I've used winsockXPFIX.exe but still the problem remains. Anyone have any suggestions?
