Please look at hijack log (CW.HomeSearch exists)
« on: March 27, 2005, 01:34:48 AM »
Please view my log;

When i run CWShredder, it finds CWS.HomeSearch and removes it, after that everything seems to be okay.

However, after awhile while, the symptoms will come back (IE hijacked to homepage of www.veryeasysearch, when clicking on windows explorer, my PC will freeze up, random pop-ups)

I have 2 logs; the first one is a log when my symptoms exist (CWS.HomeSearch has not been removed by CWShredder)
The second log is when my symptoms don't exist (When CWS.HomeSearch is removed by CWShredder)

Thanks.

Let's try the following
CWShredder seemed to rid you of part of the infection, I want to ensure it's gone

Download Cwsserviceremove.zip and UNZIP it to your desktop
So you will have cwsserviceremove.reg on your desktop
[attachment=92:attachment]

======Download to desktop About:Buster.zip
by RubbeR Ducky
Unzip the contents to desktop, a folder will be placed on your desktop
Open it and run About:buster.exe
Click the Update Button and check for updates, if any, download them
Then close it for now, we'll need this later

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Next: Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
and hit Enter
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Network Security Service (NSS)

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

===Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools Section>>Open "Delete an NT Service"
Copy and Paste the next entry in bold to the blank box and hit OK

Network Security Service (NSS)

Do the same for this service name

11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I

Access your add/remove programs and remove if found
E2Give Browser Add On

===Stay in safe mode and navigate to these files or folders and delete them if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\system32\addrt.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\ceres.dll
C:\WINDOWS\sixtypopsix.exe
C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe
c:\windows\system32\ftqocalw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ifm4svc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\imgrclnr.exe

C:\Program Files\E2G <-folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc <-folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr <-folder

Again, In safe mode
Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,

Navigate to About:buster you unzipped and updated earlier
===Start About:Buster and hit ok.   Now for the scanning part. Hit Start and then Ok. The program should start scanning.Scan a Second time. Save the log... Then hit exit
You may have to scan more than twice, try 3 or 4 times until no files or Data Streams are found

===Double click on cwsserviceremove.reg and allow it to merge to the registry

===RESTART back in Normal mode

===Look for shell.dll in your C:\Windows\system32 folder
If it is not there, Go into System32\dllcache folder
Find shell.dll
Right click on shell.dll and choose copy from the menu. Then paste it into the
system32 folder

===Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page

=== Under the  Security tab | Custom Level
Check ActiveX security settings:
Make sure that the following settings are correct:
o Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
o Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
o Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
o Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled)
o Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt)

==Post back a fresh Hijackthis log
Also the logs from About:Buster

===Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Hosts file manager
Click the "Open in Notepad"
Copy and paste back the whole contents of this notepad file too

Could you also let me know if you have Spybot 1.3 installed
I'm just checking

Your logs looking good
It appears you saved CWShredder to your Temp folder
Not recommended, it should be saved to a permanent folder
It usually runs as a service when it wants too remove remnants on startup, I believe

I would Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc and hit Enter
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- CWShredder Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools Section>>Open "Delete an NT Service"
Copy and Paste the next entry in bold to the blank box and hit OK

CWShredder Service

Afterwards do a Disk Cleanup
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in cleanmgr and hit Enter
Ensure Temp and Temporary Internet files are checked

I would also run a Spywarechecker on your computer
Both of the below are free, I run them both
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version or the paid version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates

Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer  to finish the cleaning process

Download and Install Spybot S&D 1.3
After installation--Click the Update button on the left, in the window on the right click the
SEARCH FOR UPDATES button, Check and download all updates
Click the "Search and Destroy" Button
In the right window, click the
Check for Problems Let it complete it's scanning---Ensure to check and FIX everything in RED---they should be checked by default
RESTART your computer to finish the Cleaning process

After running the above, if you would like to try running CWShredder again
Please download it too a Permanent folder and then click only the FIX button
If anything found Restart your computer again to finish cleaning
You can get a direct download from my signature below

Post back one last hijackthis log afterwards and let me know how things are running

okay, well my downloads folder isn't a temp folder, it is a permanent folder as nothing gets deleted in it. It is a folder I created and monitor (if that's what your referring to)

When i ran CWShredder it found and removed CWS.Look2Me
When I rebooted, it did not find it.

I have Ad-Aware Pro and I have been running it numerous times before.

Everything seems to be running fine again, I really appreciate your help!

Just on my way out
Did CWShredder find anything? EDIT>>I seen you said it did
I see it's still running as a service
But now from your Desktop

As you can see in your last log, it looked like it was running from your temp directory
O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Sagar N\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\S7JB20HP\CWShredder[1].exe (file missing)

Now it's running here
O23 - Service: CWShredder Service - InterMute, Inc. - C:\Documents and Settings\Sagar N\Desktop\CWShredder.exe

You may want to reboot the computer and see if the CWShredder service is still around afterwards>>Let me know if CWShredder fixes anything

hmm..well the the service was still there acutally. I looked in services.msc and CWShredder Service was still enabled (not running though). I disabled it, and deleted it in Hijackthis using the delete NT service. When i restarted it seems to have been deleted now. Log is clean and services.msc doesn't show the service. Hopefully it won't show up again. Oh and CWShredder didnt fix anything when i restarted either.

Thanks for everything

Heres the log i took just now:

Looks good

If everything is running better

You should clear your System Restore points
disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

IE-Spyad works fine with XP Service pack 2
