Sloooooowest computer ever
« on: March 28, 2005, 06:26:33 PM »
Hi guys/gals-- let me just say, first of all, you are all a Godsend!  Just reading thru these posts has helped pull me from "uhhhhh, what?" status to "okay, I think this is what we need to do next..." whenever there is a computer related problem.  At least I have an idea of what could be causing the problem and where to find the tools to fix it, which is way ahead of where I was not so long ago, and it seems to be way ahead of most of my peers, too.  Sure makes me look good!  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Anyway-- here's my problem-- this computer is running extremely slow.  I just ran a Windows Update and it took 3 1/2 hours, and it still needs 3 of the ones that need to be installed separately done (they had never ran an update and I lost my patience), and I just ran a Trend Micro virus scan (they don't have virus software on their computers either) that just got done after about 4 hours...incidentally, there was a PE BAGLE.N-O virus that could not be "accessed" and therefore cleaned because a process was running-- ? Adobe Photoshop Albumstarter?  It's probably somewhere in this logfile and I don't see it...  but I haven't run anything else, such as CWShredder or AdAware and I didn't know if maybe that would be something you'd want me to do before this.  Sorry for the long-winded prelude, here's my logfile.  Thanks for your help...

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINNT\System32\P2P Networking\P2P Networking.exe /AUTOSTART

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

I would Access your Add/Remove programs and remove if found
P2P Networking Usually added by Kazaa and is unneeded, can cause system slowdowns and slow down your browsing experience
If prompted to remove Altnets Do so

Restart your computer

Find and delete
C:\WINNT\System32\P2P Networking <-this folder

Not sure if you download Ad-Aware yet
But, it's a great program
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version or the paid version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates

Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer  to finish the cleaning process

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards

How's it running?

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Just make a system repair. I've searched for three days to find the solution and the only thing you need to do is a sipmle system repair. Good luck to everyone with the same problem. And thank to smartsecurity who will soon be seen in court.

Thank Belgium...
