Going nuts, need help, trojan galore!!
« on: March 30, 2005, 09:53:43 AM »
Hi there, my husband (a teacher) was looking for the game plinko online and in his travels of googling and such has contracted many unmentionables. We got ceres, some sixty six somethin or another and tons more. I have tried spybot and it finds 300+ spyware and such but then it quarantines and tries deleting and then crashes so it never does get rid of stuff. I think I tried a spy doctor and found the same but then says something didn't load right and then it doesn't fix stuff before it crashes. I believe I tried Adaware and I delete the stuff it said was wrong but when I go to restart the computer it is a blank blue screen and then when I control alt del, nothing comes up, not even explorer. So I revert back to a safer time with Go Back. I am at a loss of what to do next. Usually spybot and adaware takes care of stuff but I am assuming I have bigger problems. Please help, I can't do anything without numerous popups. My husband needs the PC for working for school and can't get much done. Any suggestions will be appreciated greatly. Thank you. Log below. Also there are some programs that won't delete from the add/remove properties also.
I have a Windows 98 system.

You have a few problems on your computer

First try this
Access your Add/Remove programs and remove if found
WebSearch Toolbar
WebSearch Tools
Search Assistant
Win-Tools Easy Installer

# Do not reboot until they have all been removed even if prompted.

# When you are uninstalling the last program you can then reboot when prompted

Ensure to Restart your computer
When your back in Windows
Ensure to leave all browser windows closed, don't go online

Go back to Add/Remove programs and remove if found
New.net Application or New.net Domains

If not found, please go to their removal page
http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html
Use the uninstaller from Procedure 4
You can save it to desktop and run it from there
Please close ALL other windows before running

RESTART your computer afterwards

Back in Windows
Enter Add/Remove programs
Uninstall if found

POP!
MEDIA ACCESS

Again, restart your computer after removal

After doing what you can from the above, come back here and post a fresh Hijackthis log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Yes, you still have troubles, I just wanted to get you started with cleaning your machine
Download and Save Findit9xMe.zip

UNZIP the folder within to desktop
Open the folder FindIt9xMe and double click on Findit9xMe.bat. It will run for a bit, then produce a log (ignore any File not found messages on the screen, it should continue anyway). Please copy and paste that log here as well.
Give this time to finish

Also post back a fresh Hijackthis log

After posting both logs back here, Don't restart your computer again until we have tried some fixes

Thanks again for your time, when I go to double click on that file after unzipping it, a box comes up that says c:/unzipped/finditgxme/Findlt9xME/Findlt9xMe.bat
and then it doesn't let me do anything else. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hmm, works for me
Can you redownload the zipped file and Saved it to your Desktop
UNZIP the folder within to your desktop

Now you can delete the zipped file you downloaded after you unzipped it

Open the Findit9xme folder and Double click on findit9XMe.bat
Sit back and wait for the log

I didn't see your last reply, give me a minute

Can you follow method 2 from this link?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q139434/

It sounds exactly like your problem

If not, for now
Download and save to Desktop DLLCompare

Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com

Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long

Click the Compare button to start the next process. This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button
Post back this log

Also, Download and save too desktop
VX2 Finder.exe
Open VX2 finder and
"Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet"
Let it complete a quick scan and then Make a log and post it back

Hi there, I am trying to follow that step 2 but I don't understand what to put in for the following step.

4. In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type drive:\windows\path\file (where drive is the drive where the Windows folder is installed, generally drive C, path is the destination of the file that you are extracting, and file is the file that you want to extract

Thanks

Well, in the meantime I did the other things you suggested. The Vx2 one came up with the following log:

Log for VX2.BetterInternet File Finder (ver126)

First, lets show hidden files

Open My Computer.
    * Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
*Uncheck>>Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click OK.

Can you find this zipped folder, let me know

C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\WIN98_45.CAB

Let's do the following

Go to START>>RUN>>Type in
sfc
Hit OK

You should be at the System File Checker
Choose to Extract one File from Disk radio button

In the Specify the system file you would like to restore type

winoa386.new

Then hit ENTER on your keyboard

In the Restore from type
C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS

In the Save in box type
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

Hit Enter on your keyboard

Should get a prompt it was successfully extracted
Exit SFC

Navigate to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder by
Double clicking on the following
MyComputer
C:\ drive
Windows
System

Look for winoa386.mod and winoa386.new

Right click on winoa386.mod and rename it too winoa386.old
Left click a blank area to set

Right click on winoa386.new and rename it too winoa386.mod
Left click to set

Exit out and Restart your computer

Try Findit9xMe.bat again

When I went into windows I only find a winoa386.new and a winoa386081104.mod. Did you still want me to change the winoa386.new?

Thanks

Just on my way to work, sounds like it's corrupt
Change winoa386081104.mod to winoa386081104.old

and rename winoa386.new>>>winoa386.mod

Restart the computer

Sorry, just popped in to see how your doing
I would really appreciate if you could run the Findit9xMe.bat instead

That is the preferred method of ridding you of this infection
