i need some spyware/adware help
« on: April 28, 2005, 03:38:22 PM »
i have done all the right things in trying to clean all this spyware/adware off my computer but there is one that has me baffled. i'm not sure what it is called but when it pops up there is what appears to be a domain address in the address bar. then sometimes that domain address changes to a website. the domain address shows one of two things. either 69.42.87.204 or 69.42.87.221. when it directs to a website, it is either begin2search.com or popupsearches.com. it also makes random words on websites a hyperlink. if you pass over them with your mouse it says sponsored link. if you click them it will take you to one of the previously mentioned sites. i have ran adaware, spybot s&d, CWShredder, macafee virus scan, and i have spyware blaster running. can anyone help? i have been fighting this for weeks! here's my HJT log:

i need some spyware/adware help
« Reply #1 on: April 29, 2005, 12:34:07 AM »
Your showing signs of a newer infection

Can you do the following please
Download and UNZIP to desktop
Cleanall.zip so you now have
remove.bat and clear.reg on the deskop
We'll need these later
[attachment=184:attachment]

Could you also
==Download and then Install
Ewido Trojan Scanner

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We'll fix that later
From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido
We'll need it later

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, after the single post beep, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

In safe mode
Find and delete these files or folders if found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rsyncmon.dll <-file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsn170.dll <-file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\netsync.exe <-file

C:\Program Files\dlsmgr <-folder

Double click on remove.bat
A dos window will open and close, this is normal

==Open Ewido trojan scanner
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take a while, so give it time to run
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Save the report

Double click on clear.reg and allow to merge to the registry

Stay in safe mode
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
Not all may exist, but fix what you find

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log and the report from Ewido's

NOTE: If at any time on startup if Microsoft AntiSpyware prompts of a change, Allow it so it won't interfere with any fixes

I wanted to deal with that later, could you now go into msconfig and enable all on startup
and then post back a fresh Hijackthis log
you shouldn't have to restart your computer after you enable all

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

i need some spyware/adware help
« Reply #7 on: April 30, 2005, 12:51:05 PM »
Still some cleanup to do
Download and save iSearch.zip and then UNZIP the contents to desktop
So you now have iSearch.reg on the desktop
[attachment=186:attachment]
We'll need this later

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
Install for now, don't run a scan yet

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, after the single post beep, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

Find and delete these files or folders if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\System32\netsync.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.exe <-file
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flencpy.exe <-file, should be gone,but take a look
C:\WINDOWS\mcm <-folder
C:\Program Files\hpdll <-folder
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs <-folder
C:\Program Files\Bpt <-folder
C:\Program Files\bpc_search <-folder
C:\Program Files\DR_S <-folder

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RSync] C:\WINDOWS\System32\netsync.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mcm] C:\WINDOWS\mcm\mcm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KAVPersonal50] "C:\Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal\kav.exe" /minimize
<-this one, it looks like Kapersky is not installed anymore, is it?
Plus you don't need 2 AV's running on startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPNT] C:\Program Files\hpdll\hpdll.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gah95on6] C:\WINDOWS\System32\gah95on6.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FlenCPY] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flencpy.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BPT] "C:\Program Files\Bpt\bpt.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BPCv2] C:\Program Files\bpc_search\BPCv2.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DR_S] C:\Program Files\DR_S\DR_S.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
<-not needed on startup

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Stay in Safe mode
Double click on iSearch.reg and allow to merge to the registry

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
Decline to log off
Instead, Restart your computer back to Normal mode

Post back with a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards

Looks good,

If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster 3.3 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Why so far behind on Windows updates????
If your version of Windows is legit, this is important to keeping your system secure

NOTE:
A few entries in your log are optional to run
Eg....
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPMon32.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] "C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd.exe"

You can look within the programs themselves to disable them on startup
and use a startup manager to control them on startup
Such as
Mike Lin's startup control panel
You can use msconfig to disable them, but this startup manager is small and I think a better way to control them
Take a look, there's others out there, but this one is small in size
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

You will have to track down what you don't need running on startup
Use this link to help you out
http://castlecops.com/modules.php?name=StartupList
Eg.. I put this into the search field IPClient.exe
Here's what I get
Code: [Select]
Installed with Verizon DSL accounts. IP Insight is a Quality of Service monitor and diagnostic tool that isn't required - see here for more information. This one constantly "phones home" and wastes resource - hence the "X" status
