CoolWWWSearch and EffectiveBandToolbar
« on: May 02, 2005, 07:07:46 AM »
So I go on a road trip, and my wife uses my computer while I'm gone. Of course now I have all sorts of problems, mostly centered around IE. First it just kept going to the stupid about:blank page, but after using cwshredder, now I have these pop-up windows occur at seemingly random times even though I use Firefox instead of IE.

Spybot detects CoolWWWSearch.Leftovers and EffectiveBandToolbar.

I downloaded Hijack This and put it in its own folder, ran a scan and saved the log. Log is below:

Access your Add/Remove programs and remove it if found
ADWAREFILTERTOOLBAR

Next
==Download and save to Desktop
SpSeHjfix112.zip
From that link
Unzip the contents, so you now have SpSeHjfix112.zip on your desktop

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
Install for now, don't run a scan yet

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, after the single post beep, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

Find and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\AdwareFilterToolBar <-folder

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
Decline to Log off

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\GLENHI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\GLENHI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll/sp.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C30BD393-EC85-4B78-8835-60EE806AD1DD} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jnpohj.dll

O3 - Toolbar: AdwareFilter - {1028F737-81E7-452B-A860-E50CAD90A08C} - C:\Program Files\AdwareFilterToolBar\AdwareFilter.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sp] rundll32 C:\DOCUME~1\GLENHI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\se.dll,DllInstall

O18 - Filter: text/html - {B9929507-5772-4D24-BC64-2C5955DCE8EC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jnpohj.dll
O18 - Filter: text/plain - {B9929507-5772-4D24-BC64-2C5955DCE8EC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jnpohj.dll

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

==Run SpSeHjfix112.zip.exe by clicking the Start Disinfection
It should reboot your computer
If not Reboot anyways back to Normal mode
Back in Windows>>The tool would of created a log, could you copy and paste that log to a location such as MyDocuments, just so we don't overwrite it when we run the tool again

Run
SpSeHjfix112.exe again
Restart your computer afterwards

Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Reset home page

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log and the logs from SpSeHjfix

Thanks for the reply!

I followed some of the steps already from a previous poster's problems with the same CoolWWWSearch.Leftovers on these forums. Also had run a virus check using the trial of Counterspy which said it detected a couple of things it removed.

So, when I ran SpSeHjfix it didn't detect anything. However, here is the log from Hijack This:

Sorry for the delay. Looks good

If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster 3.3 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection
