Thank you Seven. Things were not exactly as you stated (all systems vary a bit) but it solved my problem. It was extremely easy too. Now to format a new 750gig drive... should be ready next week

Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc
1) Right Click on the hard disk XP is NOT seeing.
2) Click 'Mark Partition as Active'
3) Right Click on that same disk again
4) Click 'Change Drive Letters and Paths'
5) Click the 'Add' button
6) Assign a drive letter by the dropdown box.
Now wasn't that easy!
