Hello Mythz and Welcome

First, download and install  CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode.  You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.  Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below
• Run Ewido.
• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
• Binder
• Crypter
• Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds.  Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis.  Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Archive] C:\Program Files\Archive\archive.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpySheriff] C:\Program Files\SpySheriff\SpySheriff.exe

O16 - DPF: {39B0684F-D7BF-4743-B050-FDC3F48F7E3B} (FilePlanet Download Control Class) - http://www.fileplanet.com/fpdlmgr/cabs/FPDC_1_0_0_44.cab

O16 - DPF: {70BA88C8-DAE8-4CE9-92BB-979C4A75F53B} (GSDACtl Class) - http://launch.gamespyarcade.com/software/launch/alaunch.cab

Close HiJackThis.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK!

Under the "General" Tab
Make Sure Normal Startup is Checked!!

Click Apply>>OK>>Follow the Prompts to Restart!!

Restart Normal and have the PC Scanned here
Panda Active Scan

You will need to be using Internet Explorer for the Scan to work!

Save the Report it generates!

Now lets use Windows Search Assistant(Click Start>>Click Search)

Select All Files and Folders,
Select Advanced Options,
Make sure there is a check by these 3:

Search System Folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search Subfolders

Now under All Files and Folders, enter these into the text box:

Xbox_emulator.0.34

NetBUIE

RegUpdate

Sucess

Dont do anything if you locate any of these, just place all the Info you collect on those into the next post!

Post back with the results from Ewido>>Panda>>System Search and a fresh HijackThis log!

Hi Cretemonster

my PC and laptop were infected with SpySheriff for a couple of days and all other anti-virus/ anti-spy programmes are completely useless.  I have only managed to sort this out after taking the advice from you. Thanks a million !!!!  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Being a non-computer expert (this is in fact the 1st time I peform such massive procedure on my computers), Can you please let me know (or if anyone else can answer these questions - i would be very grateful)

1.  what is the download programme Smitfraud.reg for?  Can I delete it from my pc now?

2.  Ewido is definitely working - should I keep using it (i.e. purchase it) after the 14-day free trial?   I have currently got Ad-Aware, Spy-substract (and just deleted spy doctor as it can only detect but not delete under the free download).

3.  I have got McAfee (latest) on my laptop and Norton 2003 on my PC, plus Ad-Aware for both (plus a netgear router which i was told acts as a very good firewall)... how come none of these could have stopped this VERY annoying Spysheriff?

4.  My PC and laptop got affected with spysheriff after I downloaded the latest windows update (pc first and then laptop)... interestingly, after 2-3 days, my pc was affected and then my laptop.  I am very suspicious of this windows update (plus last time when i downloaded service pack 2, some problems arised and i need to ask someone else to sort it out for me... ).... does anyone think that it has something to do with this?   I mean is spysheriff quite new? Has it ever existed before the latest windows update?

Thanks again Cretemonster.

Terri

I think I did everything here and I am now scanning with PandaActiveScan but everytime I restart the computer I get:

install32m.exe
Windows cannot find 'install32m.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To searcg for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

And I am also getting a red exclamation mark in my bar and everytime I highlight the icon, it says "Your computer is infected!"

Another problem seems to be that my Win XP start menu has a different design (the start button and bar isn't blue and green, it's gray.

Please tell me the scan will fix this. I don't know what to do, the way I got this virus was running one executable and then I had to do all of this but my computer still isn't working right. It also takes longer for Win XP to log me on for some reason. Please help.

I did not want to search for another thread and so this is my hijackthis report:
