« on: July 01, 2005, 10:12:19 AM »
My computer is still infected with the virus W32. Spybot. Worm although I've followed what Norton taught online. Norton couldn't delete the files. What should I do? Do I need to reinstall the Windows? Format? Please teach me what to do. Thank you. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

Hi Michelyn
I've locked your other topic
Please keep all responses to this thread

I need you to run another scan and save log with Hijackthis
When the log opens
I need you too copy and paste the whole log back here
You can do this by clicking EDIT at the top>>Select All
Then right click and choose COPY
Paste the whole log back here with a short description of your problems

Please help me!
« Reply #5 on: July 05, 2005, 12:46:58 AM »
Can you do the following for me please
We'll see how your log looks later

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
Don't run this yet, we'll need it in a bit

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We'll fix that later
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Full database from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop

Access your add/remove programs and remove if found
KeenValue

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

Find and delete this file if found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctupdclt.exe <-this file
and this folder
C:\Program Files\Common files\SearchUpgrader <-this folder

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
DECLINE to Log off or Restart when scan is done.

==Open Ewido trojan scanner
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu
Ensure the following are checked,   * Binder* Crypter* Archives
Then click on the Start button. This scan can take a while, so give it time to run
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Save the report
NOTE: When Ewido is running do NOT open any other Windows
Let it do it's job

After the scan is complete and the log saved
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SearchUpgrader] C:\Program Files\Common files\SearchUpgrader\SearchUpgrader.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [CTUpdate] ctupdclt.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [CTUpdate] ctupdclt.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode

If you don't have this Spyware tool installed and the latest version
Can you do it now please
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Ensure you have the latest version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Back in Windows

Please follow this link and Install SP1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/express.mspx
Without this update you leave your system open for reinfection
Don't install Service Pack 2 yet, let's make sure your clean first
Restart when prompted

Back in Windows
Run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log
Could you also include the report from Ewido's

Hi Guestolo,

I don't know if this is a good news or bad news. I used Norton to scan all the drives but it gave me message like this: Norton Antivirus has found 0 infected files and 3 at-risk files. I wonder where the infected file (eied_s7_c_7.exe) has gone. I neither send my computer for repair nor reinstall the windows. So I used the McAfee online service to scan my C drive again and it also gave me message that my C drive is not infected with viruses. The 3 at-risk files are 'pmexe.cab', 'Points Manager.exe' and 'sysdetect.dll'.

Before you replied to this message, I had already posted one message about the same problem but nobody replied me. So I searched in Yahoo try to get some help. Then I got a link to this forum and a message how you helped a person with the nick 'bigunit' (if I'm not mistaken) to solve the same problem. Then I downloaded 'Hijackthis' and tried to delete the file 'eied.cab' but it didn't work. My Norton still gave me messages like "Your computer still infected with virus' after few times virus scan and deleted the infected files. So I posted another message here again and thanks God you replied.

I've already downloaded the programs that you stated in your last message but not yet install them. What should I do next?

Thanks a lot, Guestolo!

Can you please do what I asked in my first reply
All in the same steps I asked earlier

The instructions too Ewido have changed a bit however
As Ewido Has just updated it's scanning engine

Make sure Ewido has the latest updates

When it comes time to run Ewido, can you run it as follows
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Click on the Settings button on the right
Select "Scan Every File"
OK it and then click on the "Complete System Scan"
Please refrain from opening any other Windows as Ewido is running
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  1. Perform Action = Remove
  2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Do everything I asked earlier and then supply a fresh Hijackthis log and the Report from Ewidos

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you please go back to my original response and follow ALL the instructions\
Including installing Service Pack 1a
Afterwards include a fresh Hijackthis log
Without the required updates it's useless to carry on

Hi Guestolo,

The Microsoft recommended me to download Service Pack 2 only. I can't download Service Pack 1.

Can you do the following please
Download FixWebHancer.exe by Symantec's
Save it too desktop
Double click to run
Let it scan your drive and fix what it finds
If it finds anything can you please restart your computer afterwards

You should be able to Download Sp1a from this link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...1/expresso.mspx
Select your language and save the installer to desktop
Install Sp1a and restart afterwards
Make sure all other users are logged out before installing

Back in Windows, can you do the following please
Download:  Registry Search Tool from this link
http://billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip and double-click "RegSrch.vbs"
Note: if your Antivirus or another program prompts about running a ".vbs" file, allow the script to run

In the open field copy and paste the below in bold then hit OK
ctupdclt.exe

Wait for the results and post them back here

Could you also post a fresh hijackthis log

Hi Guestolo,

I've already run FixWebHancer and everything's ok.

I've followed your link but I still can't download the SP1. They gave me a message saying that my Windows is pirated or spam...things like that. I don't know about this as it was installed  by the shop when I bought the computer.

I've also run the Registry Search Tool and first a mesage like this pop out: Cannot export C:\DOCUME~1\Ming\LOCALS~1\Temp\RegTmp.tmp:Error writing the file. There may be a disk or file system error.

This is the result:

REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "ctupdclt.exe" 7/12/2005 11:35:25 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]

"CTUpdate"="ctupdclt.exe"

I updated my virus definition and scanned all my drives yesterday. The result is my computer still not infected with any virus.

Thanks a lot!

Can I please see a startup log from Hijackthis
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section
Beside Generate a Startup list
Check the two boxes
List all Minor Sections (Full)
and
List Empty Sections (complete)

After you have checked both those boxes click on
Generate a Startuplist Log
A text file will open, copy and paste back the Whole contents of this log please

Could you also do the following
Download and UNZIP to your desktop Search.zip
So you now have Search.bat extracted
Double click on Search.bat
A text file will open, can you copy and paste back the whole contents of this log too

Log looks good

If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link

Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"

Please make sure you visit Windows updates and install All Critical(High Priority) updates and Service packs
Do this on a regular basis to keep your system secure
