I REALLY NEED HELP! Win32.P2P-Wrom.Alcan.a
« on: July 02, 2005, 10:54:59 AM »
I've posted before, but never really got a solution, so I'll try again.  My computer was infected with a Win32.P2P-Worm.Alcan.a, and it won't go away.  When I scan with Ad Aware SE Plus, it finds about 8-9 of them and removes them, but they keep coming back.  The only symptom that I know of is my computer will shut off and then reboot.  After it reboots, I'll run an Ad Aware full system scan and will always find 8-9 infections of the worm.  Any help would be appreciated.  Here's my log on Hijackthis:

==Download the Pocket Killbox
UNZIP it to a folder of your choice

Can you please Disable Ad-Aware's Adwatch, it's a great feature, but can get in the way of any fixes we have to do
Don't reenable it until we have you clean
Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it.
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically.
Uncheck both options.

Please Save these instructions  too a Notepad file
saved to your desktop for reference
START>>RUN>>Type in notepad
Hit OK

Disconnect from the Internet

Open the saved instructions in the Notepad file
Run Pocket KillBox.exe
Click on Tools>>Delete Temp files

In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control  + C

Killbox files to highlight between dotted lines

Thanks for tryin to help out, I need it.  Okay, here's the low-down.  I did all the stuff in killbox and rebooted.  After the reboot, I was reading the next step and getting ready to perform it, but my computer shut off and rebooted.  So in order to buy myself some time I went into safe mode to scan with ad aware.  I did, it found the worm again, whatever.  After that, I rebooted and got through the rest of the instructions.  (I hope the whole safe mode part didn't ruin the process).  Also, I didn't find the two programs that were supposed to be uninstalled if found.  So, here's my log now:

« Reply #4 on: July 02, 2005, 02:13:23 PM »
That's ok, I bet there are more files hiding
and I still see Ad-Watch running,
Please follow this link to disable Ad-Watch
http://www.lavasofthelp.com/faq/adwatchauto.shtml

Can you do the following please
==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
We'll need this later

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We'll fix that later
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Full database from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please save these instructions too a Notepad file again

Restart back to Safe Mode

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
DECLINE to Log off when scan is done.

==Open Ewido trojan scanner
Click on the Scanner button in the left menu
Ensure the following are checked,   * Binder* Crypter* Archives
Then click on the Start button. This scan can take a while, so give it time to run
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Save the report
NOTE: When Ewido is running do NOT open any other Windows
Let it do it's job

After the scan is complete and the log saved from Ewido

Run Pocket KillBox.exe

In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
Control + C

Killbox files to highlight between dotted lines

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer doesn't restart
Please Restart it now manually back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log
Can you also include the Report from Ewidos

I REALLY NEED HELP! Win32.P2P-Wrom.Alcan.a
« Reply #5 on: July 02, 2005, 08:27:14 PM »
Okay, long story, I'll try to make it short.  I went into safe mode and used the cleaner, no problem.  Then I went to Ewido.............hmmm.  I scanned and at about 63% it comes up with a text box that said it couldn't repair a zipped file and the options were to delete all(if another one comes up it'll automatically delete it) delete or ignore.  I hit delete all.  Well, I turn my back for a bit and when I look again, the window for ewido is gone, for some reason the program shut.  Well, after numerous scans trying to figure out what was happining, I found out there where a bunch of files that needed deleted, and after about 4 or 5 it'll just quit.  I found out those files were in C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel's\Complete.  I go to the folder and there are about 1100 zipped files in there(all that I looked at I didn't know where they came from).  I took a gamble because I knew it would take a looooooooooong time to deleted these files by the scan, so I deleted everything in the folder(I don't know if that was good or bad).  When I scanned with Ewido, it fixed a few things and deleted a few things then it was done.  I've only experience one wierd thing:  when I rebooted my computer, my taskbar and windows are in the old style(blocky and grey).  I went into the display to try to change it back but the only option was the old style, it's kindof wierd but I can live with it.  If you know how to get it back tell me.  Now, once again, heres my log from HijackThis:

I REALLY NEED HELP! Win32.P2P-Wrom.Alcan.a
« Reply #6 on: July 02, 2005, 08:44:00 PM »
Good job Daniel
I was going to ask you if there was a folder created called "Complete"
Other users have complained about it

Could you do the following please
Go back to this folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel's\Complete
Are there any other files in it?
Good work on deleting the zipped files within

Could you also make sure these folders are gone
 C:\Program Files\180searchassistant
C:\Program Files\winupdates
You may have to set Windows to show Hidden files and folders
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Did the other files delete OK with Killbox?
Ewido should of recognized them if there were still around, that's why I'm asking...

Can you do the following with Ad-Aware
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Back in Windows
The hijacker may of removed a file needed to set back to Windows XP style

Can you do the following for me please
Download the zipped file I've attached below
Unzip the contents  to desktop
Double click on Find.bat and post back the contents
Also Double click on Find1.bat and post the contents

I'm stepping out for the night soon, so I may not get back to you till tomorrow
But we should be able to get you back to Normal again  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Sorry for the delay Mith
Needed to get some needed yard work out of the way

Can you do the following please

Download and Save to desktop
LUNA.Zip
Don't unzip this yet, we'll need it in a bit

Also, Download and Unzip to your desktop Fix.zip
So you have Fix.reg extracted to desktop

Can you do the following please
Double click on Fix.reg and allow to add or Merge to the registry
Restart your computer afterwards

Back in Windows
UNZIP the contents of Luna.zip
To
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna <-this folder

You must unzip only to that folder
You should now have luna.msstyles unzipped to the Luna folder
Double click on luna.msstyles in the luna folder
It should open your Display options>>Appearance tab
Let me know if you can change your appearance to XP style now
Also check out your Themes tab to ensure you can have Windows XP style

Next: Go back and reenable Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch if everything is fine

Can you repost one last hijackthis log and let me know how everythings running
Also, can you still do this
Quote
Go back to this folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel's\Complete
Are there any other files in it?

Additionally, can you right click on the "Complete" folder and left click properties and let me know the Creation date, thanks
Also, is there a "Complete" folder in any other user accounts under Documents and Settings?

Sorry for the delay Mith

It's alright, I was busy too.

I have the XP theme back now, so that's good.  Also, there's nothing in the complete folder.  My computer is still doin good and another problem that I had with games was fixed from all of this (i think).  So thanks for all the help.

I REALLY NEED HELP! Win32.P2P-Wrom.Alcan.a

Can you do the following please
If everything is running better

You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2 as well

We can probably delete the "Complete" folder

But can I still have you do this please
Quote
Additionally, can you right click on the "Complete" folder and left click properties and let me know the Creation date, thanks
Also, is there a "Complete" folder in any other user accounts under Documents and Settings?

I disabled then enabled System restore.

I already have spywareblaster, but I didn't have IE Spyad, so I installed it.

Next, the complete folder was created on June 17, 2005 at 7:23 PM, should I delete it?  And no, there isn't another complete folder because there are no other users.

Thanks for the Help.

Thanks Daniel, go ahead and remove the "Complete" folder
Send it to the recycle bin
