My computer is very sloww please help
« on: July 06, 2005, 08:26:12 PM »
Hi there, recently my computer has been very slow and im suspecting that ive been bombarded with tonnes of ad. Just thought ill let u know that i tried to install sp2 but there has been a conflict between my internet provider and sp2. Some reason that the IP skips a heart beat therefore disconnects me from the internet a trillion times. So i uninstalled sp2 and stuck with sp1 just for now until my IP makes a new progress. Ok so the point is my computer is slow and i dont know what to get rid of. Please help =)

here is the log.

« Reply #1 on: July 07, 2005, 11:56:17 AM »
One thing that could be slowing it down is prefetch.
The prefetch is supposed to make your computer run faster. The problem is it doesn't work right, I found this on another site:

"Windows XP Professional monitors the files that are used when the computer starts and when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows XP Professional can prefetch them. Prefetching data is the process whereby data that is expected to be requested is read ahead into the cache. Prefetching boot files and applications decreases the time needed to start Windows XP Professional and start applications."

The prefetch folder is C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch delete everything in there then set the registry to only prefetch boot up by using the info below.

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD Value // Value Name: EnablePrefetcher
Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = Application Launch Prefetch / 2 = Boot Prefetch / 3 = Prefetch All]

Exit Registry and Reboot

This should help, also some of the spyware out there put files in here this is the easiest way to make sure you remove those files

Hi anne, I'm just stepping out to go for dinner

When I get back I'll review your log
 http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

In the Meantime, can you do the following please
You have Messenger Plus 3 installed
Although the program itself is OK, the Sponsor installed with it is spyware

Can you please do the following
Uninstall Messenger Plus completely, you can reinstall it later, choosing NOT to install the Sponsor
DO NOT reinstall the program again until we have your Hijackthis log clean

1. Click on the "Start" button in the lower-left corner of your screen and choose "Control Panel".

2. Choose "Add or Remove Programs" in your Control Panel. A list of all your installed programs will pop up.

3. Select "Messenger Plus! 3" in the software list and click the "Change/Remove" button.

4. You will be asked what you want to remove when you have installed Messenger Plus! with the optional sponsor. If you want to get rid of the search bar, advertisements, icons on your desktop and changed start page but keep Messenger Plus! itself, choose "Uninstall the sponsor program only".

NOTE: Can you ensure you uninstall MSN PLUS 3 completely, on top of removing the Sponsor

5. When you uninstall Plus! you are asked if you want to keep your settings and/or Plus! plugins in case you want to re-install Plus!. Uncheck the boxes in front of the options to keep it.

6. Press "Uninstall" to remove Messenger Plus!. Messenger will be shutdown.

7. An additional window will pop up when you chose to uninstall the sponsor program. Type over the verification code in the empty box and press "UNINSTALL" to completely remove the sponsor program.

8. The uninstall procedure is complete, press "Close" when you're done.

Important: Some files locked by the system will not be deleted until you restart your PC.
Please Restart your computer

Back in Windows, run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

In safe mode
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Manually navigate and delete these files if found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ash.dll <-file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\iehelper.dll <-file
Search for this next file and delete it if found
ddm.exe

Can you also let me know if you can find these files please
C:\WINDOWS\email.log
C:\WINDOWS\pass.log
C:\WINDOWS\form.log
C:\WINDOWS\req.log

Stay in safe mode
==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
Decline to Log off or Restart

==Double click on fix.reg and allow to add or Merge to the registry

Open Ad-Aware
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

Restart your computer back to Normal mode

Open Hoster and
Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK".
Then Exit

Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Reset home page

I see you have Kapersky's Anti-Virus installed
but I don't see it running in your processes,
This could indicate a trojan has affected your AV
EDIT>>If your having problems with it
You should uninstall your Anti-Virus and Reinstall it, afterwards ensure it's totally updated and run a full system scan

After that is done
You don't have Service pack 2 or Service Pack 1 installed
Can you for now
Navigate to this link and install Service Pack 1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/express.mspx
This is important in keeping your system secure
Don't install SP2 yet, let's make sure your clear of malicious activity

After the reboot from installing SP1a can you run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log

I see you have Zone alarm installed, it's a good choice
Is XP's firewall enabled or disable?
Not a good idea running more that one firewall at a time
Stick with ZA's and make sure XP's is disabled

Have you defragged your system lately?

The FREE version of DAP is not recommended, known to be associated with Spyware
Spyware can slow your internet browsing habits

Can you do the following please

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section
Beside Generate a Startup list
Check the two boxes
List all Minor Sections (Full)
and
List Empty Sections (complete)

After you have checked both those boxes click on
Generate a Startuplist Log
A text file will open, copy and paste back the Whole contents of this log please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Hi anne, not sure why your IE is closing down on those links
Can we try and see if it's just an IE problem

Could you download this other free browser, my favorite  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
Mozilla Firefox
After installation try some of those links and let me know if you get through

Personally, before you install Firefox, if you haven't Defragged your hard drive for awhile
You should do so now
Go to START>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools
Disk Defragment
Run the tool and then restart the computer afterwards
Then install Firefox
The new version of Firefox just came out, I'm going to uninstall my version and get the latest right now

I was hoping to find out
When you open the same links with Firefox, does firefox close down
Are you able to access the sites?
Or is it just a problem with IE?

Could you run an online virus scan with Panda's a see if it comes up with anything
Use IE to run the scan
The link is in my signature
Save the report from Panda's and post it back here
Could you also run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log please

Could you also
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Hosts file manager
Click the "Open in Notepad"
A text file will open, can you copy and paste the whole contents back here too
