Hijacked, please help
« on: July 16, 2005, 02:23:41 PM »
I have run Spybot, Ad-aware, Panda, Norton and HouseCall on my computer.  They found either nothing or one incidence of Spyware (housecall - removed) I also ran Hijack This.  However when I went to postin this forum on that computer, after posting logs.  It timed out and said error on page!

MY computer's symptons are - taking forever to open a program or choose a desktop/switch users.  Also can not email.  Won';t browse to some pages. When starting up I can here the drive churning away even after the hour glass goes away.  It's very busy doing something but not under my command!

I am posting on another computer.  Is there something else you can suggest I do without seeing a HJT log?  I can't email on that computer ( part of it's new symptons wasn't happening a week ago)  either so I couldn't email logs to this one.   http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

Thank you in advance for anything you can do.

Okay I calmed down and thought about copying files to disc and walking it over to other computer.   http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  So here are Panda and HJT logs:

Incident                      Status                        Location

Adware:adware/brilliantdigitalNo disinfected                HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{48E59292-9880-11CF-9754-00AA00C00908}

Does this mean Panda thinks Ad-aware is spyware or that the Spyware was found inside Ad-aware?  btw I have version 1.06.  Spybot 1.4.

Tried to delete suspicious files? I have a [censored]ing worm on my pc... But well... Anyway try to delete the quarantined files in Ad-aware. Then no files will be seen in the others and they will be gone forever... Maybe. and then run Spybot: Search and Destroy. Delete all quarantined files byebye to them and do a search on Spybot first and then Ad-aware. Then the others. If that wont work. Call support on Microsoft. Or email the support. If that dont work! Delete everything except the most neccesary! Then re-install Windows XP, ME, 98 or 95! Then DELETE everything on C: and then u wont have anything left except Windows but I think u can re-install the programs u had before!

And my advice: If u download files from Internet. Scan them before u open them! If u dont the program can open a port to ur PC and it will mess up like last time.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'^_^\' />

The Panda scan isn't  pointing towards Ad-Aware
It's letting you know it found an entry related to Adware
Different spelling

Is this computer having problems connecting online all the time or just sometimes?

Have you tried Winsock fix?
Just curious if this would help
Here's a link
Save it too desktop
Close down all browser windows before running
It should reboot your computer when it's done, if not reboot manually

Computer is not having connection problems but navigating to certain pages.  In the case of this site, I posted my issues and then clicked on "post" it never submitted the info- timed out to cannot find page....twice I tried. Happens on other sites where I am not submitting infoalso, just won't go to certain sites that last week were no problem!  So I am having to go across the room to the other computer to post on this site.

Can anything be done with the adware Panda discovered?

Will try Winsock fix and let you know.

Ran Winsock fix and see no difference.  Still cannot navigate some sites.  I think I am going to revise a previous thought.  If I ever have to send information like a post here, getting directions in mapquest, checking webmail then a site will hang, if I am just viewing I can move around fine.

Still posting from other cmputer,
BillP

Are you running through  a router?
Could be some setting your missing, just a thought

Can you do the following please
Download and UNZIP to desktop IEFix.zip
So you now have IEFix.reg extracted
Double click on IEFix.reg and allow to add or merge to the registry
[attachment=296:attachment]

We should remove some unneeded entries in your hijackthis log and see if things improve
Programs work fine without the below running on startup

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\VisualIPInsight\IPMon32.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\VisualIPInsight\IPClient.exe" -l
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart your computer
Don't open a browser yet, instead
Access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content
Under Content tab>>Clear SSL Slate

Now open IE, if closed, if open shut IE and restart it
Any better?
If not you should try a different browser
My favorite browser which is free is Mozilla Firefox
You can download it from the below link
http://www.mozilla.org/
Use firefox and see if you can access sites you couldn't with IE

Yeah it worked I posted on my own computer.  Plus I can go to sites I couldn't before and I'm flying again with my FiOS!!

Thank you very much.

I did get an error message: "Generic host process for Win 32 Services encountered a problem and needed to close." upon reboot after clicking items in HiJack This.  Is this an issue?

Do recommend switching to Firefox anyway?  Is it true it is less vulnerable than IE?  What do you read your mail with if using Firefox?  I assume it will not interact with Outlook or OE?

Very much obliged with your assistance.

That's strange about the Generic host process error
I'll assume that it's because we disabled these 2 on startup, but I'm not sure
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\VisualIPInsight\IPMon32.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 01] "C:\Program Files\Verizon Online\VisualIPInsight\IPClient.exe" -l

Yes, I would install and use Firefox
Check out it's features
If you click on TOOLS>>READ MAIL
It will open your Email client

Can you post another hijackthis log
Let's make sure it looks clean then maybe we could try restoring those 2 entries and see if the problem persists

I am back to not being able to post here and not able to go to certain sites.   Also, I get the host error intermittently. Not sure what the trigger.

I was on vacation for a few days sorry for delay in reply.  I tried to post a new HiJackThis log before I left and I found I couldn't post. Shut it down and it the beach!!!  Now I need to get it working.  Will try to copy and post from another computer the HJT log for you.

Ran Housecall this morning and it found nothing.

My symptoms of not being able to navigate to certain sites, mainly email, when submitting information still exists.

The overall computer still runs a little slow - opens programs with delay switches users slow etc.  don;t hear the churning as much.

I have three different browsers and the problem ixists with all of them.  Mozilla, IE and MSN.

Don't worry about the reg entry found from Panda's
Could be a false positive
We should see if your Hosts file is corrupt, can you open Hijackthis
and then open the Misc tools section
Click the "Hosts file Manager"
Then click the "Open in Notepad button"

I know it may be tough, but can you post the contents of that Hosts text back here please

Also, Have you tried disabling Norton's Firewall to see if the problems persist
You should enable XP's firewall ahead of time
But don't run both at once

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

How do I disable Norton's firewall?  I don't see anything in options etc.  Know how to enable XP's.

here is host file info:

# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1       localhost
