I think I have sorted my problem, I did a search in registry and found a reference to HPPhotogallery, I restarted my pc this time with a disc which came with my HP printer (install disc) and the install has completed, as to why this should have happened I don't know as i have been using the printer now for some months.  The only thing I can think of is HP haost web photo albums and that has changed this week to something called snapfish, perhaps this caused the problem???

1.  Click Start and then on Run.
2.  Type MSCONFIG.
3.  Click OK.
The Configuration Utility should open on the screen.

4.  Click the General tab.
5.  Choose Selective startup.
6.  Click STARTUP tab.
7.  Uncheck all the programs which start with HP or hp.
8.  Click OK.

Restart the system.

If you are getting a message "System Configuration Utility You are using
the selective startup for troubleshooting your system", I suggest you
check the check box in that window and click OK.  This occurs if you are
using the Selective startup option and not using the normal startup to
reduce the number of startup programs.
