I have no clue what is wrong!!!!!
« on: August 23, 2005, 03:53:04 PM »
So the last computer is doing great...except that they replaced it with this one and this one has problems and I have no idea what they are....

We purchased a copy of PC Cillin for the computer becuase we were having lots of problems with the computer running slow and spyware was abundant. One adaware scan produce 456 spyware. However PC Cillin has not changed the way the computer runs for better or worse.

So I come, once again, and ask for help. Thank you in advance.
I will patiently wait your answer. In the meantime here is a hijack this log.

Will we just do to this computer what we did last time??? Or is it different?? Just thought I should ask before I go ahead and make things worse.

Thanks Again

Oh yeah...I almost forgot. This computer is a dinosaur. It is running Windows 98....I heard somewhere that this would make a difference.

Thanks

Hi again Griffinsgirl

I see you ran Ad-Aware, good move, I hope it's the latest version
Ad-Aware 1.06

You should also run Spybot 1.4 on your computer

Can you do the following please
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and download all updates
Don't run a scan yet

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

Please redownload Hijackthis from my Signature below and save it too a permanent folder on your drive
We're going to clean your temp folders and your backups from Hijackthis will be lost

After you have done the above

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WINTOOLS\WTOOLSA.EXE

O16 - DPF: {1D0D9077-3798-49BB-9058-393499174D5D} - file://c:\counter.cab

O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/AgeVerif...bridge-c420.cab

I would fix the next ones too, they're not threats, but considered resource hogs
and not needed on startup. Programs work fine without them
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LoadQM] loadqm.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msnappau] "c:\program files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.03.0000.1005\en-us\msnappau.exe"

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your Add/Remove programs and remove if found
Wintools for IE

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

In safe mode
Find and delete the following files or folder if found
c:\counter.cab <-file

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WINTOOLS <-folder

Stay in safe mode
==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files
DECLINE to Log off or Restart when scan is done.

Open Spybot
Click the Search & Destroy button on the left
Check for Problems---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer back to Normal mode
Don't open a browser yet
Instead, access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"

Run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log

With the entry highlighted by using the arrow keys in hijackthis
To select the entry use your SPACE bar
Use the arrow keys to navigate to each entry for removal

To move from the main log to "fix checked" you should be able to use your SHIFT + TAB keys and then hit ENTER

Here's some more info

The full page from Microsoft may not load first time, keep trying till it fully loads if you have problems

That's looking better, I know I linked you too SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad
previously with your other computer
Great tools to use on this computer also

NOTE: This line in your log
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [KB891711] c:\windows\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

It's legitimately installed by Windows Updates from Microsoft, however some users find problems with this update
Here's a quote from a startup list
Quote
Installed by the Windows KB891711 critical update  see this http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/MS05-002.mspx security bulletin - this file reportedly needs to continue running in order to patch the vulnerability  at least until a more practical solution is found.  There have however been reports of fatal exception errors in systems running Windows 98  and in such a case Microsoft advises to either uninstall the patch (Add/Remove Programs) or prevent it from running at startup.

I have 98SE installed on my other computer and find no problems with it running on startup, if your one of the users experiencing problems with it we should disable it
Let me know
