Any help anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.  I am backing up all of my important files now to do a complete re-install of xp.

I am running XP SP2, pentium4, 3.0 Ghz, 1gig ram, and have McAffee virusscan, personalfirewall plus, spamkiller, Spybot, registry mechanic, Ad-aware, and spyware doctor.  I can't see anything wrong with this log.

PLEASE HELP!! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

I'm not seeing anything malicious that would cause this, of course that doesn't mean that you can't run a couple free scans

Just from some double checks

Try the following if you would like
==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
Don't run this yet, we'll need it in a bit

==Download and save WinPFind.zip
UNZIP the contents to your desktop
Don't run it yet

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We'll fix that later
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please Save these instructions too a Notepad file on the desktop for reference
and/or Print this out
Restart your computer into
SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files
DECLINE to Log off or Restart when scan is done.

==Open Ewido trojan scanner
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Click on the Settings button on the right
Select "Scan Every File"
OK it and then click on the "Complete System Scan"
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

NOTE: When Ewido is running do NOT open any other Windows
Let it do it's job

Open the WinPFind folder you extracted to desktop
Double click on WinPFind.exe
This could take some time as it will scan your drive
Once the Scan is Complete
   1. Reboot back to Normal mode
   2. Go to the WinPFind folder
   3. Locate WinPFind.txt in the WinPfind folder

Post the results of the WindPFind.txt
Also post the results from Ewido and a fresh hijackthis log
The above may not help, but will aid in cleaning and identifying if anything malicious found on your computer

I actually already had Cleanup, I never thought of running it in safe mode, though.  Ewido found 12 files infected.  Here are the results that you asked for:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Computer acting wierd...HijackThis Log
« Reply #3 on: August 25, 2005, 07:45:42 PM »
Hey... the wierdest thing just happened.  I was playing bejeweled 2 and when I was done and went back to my desktop, most of my icons had changed into small IE pages with the arrow.  I ttried to shut down to restart and I couldn't.  I manually restarted and they came back up the same way.  It appears that I have to manually restore each icon on my desktop.  I don't know what's going on with them, I have never seen this before.  I also had to verify my McAfee virus scan before I could use it.  I verified it fine and I don't know if this is connected to my icon problem.  Kind of wierd.

I changed all of my icons back manually except those that pointed to web pages.  Those would not change back to the IE "e" that they should.  I can't change those icons at all now.

Google seems to be one of the only icons that didn't change itself.  I notice that when I try to change the icons to the typical link shortcut, there is a red asterisk next to the usual one.  I can change to other icons, but not the usual one.  Could this icon have just been corrupted?  I didn't do anything to anything except what you have told me to do.  I hate this computer.  Gotta love technology.

Can you delete the shortcut and create a new one
After it is created double click on it to see if the new shortcut works

Nope, it doesn't work.  The icons for IE and Outlook Express in the start button have lost it too.

I'm just on my way to work
We may have to delete your shelliconcache and restart windows to see if the problem is resolved
Icons may be corrupt

But try this first, enter your display properties by right clicking an empty spot on the desktop and left click properties
Under the Appearance tab try switching icon size
I've seen this helped a few others, don't know if it will work, but worth a shot
Let me know how you make out

I'll have more time later tonight to help out

That's no good either.  I tried changing the font size to large and I tried changing the icon size from 32 to 29.  Still no good.

Here's what IE-Spyad is all about
It's a great addition

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
