oem key
« on: September 01, 2005, 07:59:08 AM »
several years ago i bought a hp pavilion. did not come with a xp home disk. after hp changed their policy i was able to get the 7 restore cds. later i needed to repair it and did not want to totally wipe out my system. so i used copy a friend had given me (i think the msdn subscription version) and used the xp keygen to activate it.

no the WGA come along. i know i don't need it to be genuine to get the critical updates and i have even disabled the add-on to see all the updates.

however, i am wondering what microsoft will do next and would like to try to get back to my oem version and key without rebuilding the whole system.

i talked to microsoft support one day. did not tell them this whole story of course. they lady generated a couple keys for me but they did not work and she suggested i get in touch with my oem.

any ideas? thanks.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

you should have an XP key on your computer, Input that. If that doesn't work, call Hp...

yeah, tried that. oem keys will not work with retail versions. out of support with hp. doesn't seem like i should have to pay for something i bought in the first place. it is irritating. m$ policy while designed to curb pirates is turning ordinary folds into exactly that because they don't want to go thru hoops to get what they bought...or thought they did.

hmmm...looks like you're gonna have to get a new key. Look on ebay..they have really cheap XP OEM copies.

Linux is a viable alternative aswell http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
