Alcan woes
« on: September 14, 2005, 03:55:06 PM »
HI, after running Adaware I discovered I have the Alcan worm on my Pc,
I've been reading some of the other posts and have downloaded most of the recommneded software and just wondering should I just plod on with the bits I got or should I wait for someone with more experience before proceeding, other symptoms include hiding of my system32 folder another folder full of stuff called 'complete' which is full of applications video n other stuff , also hidden.
My command prompt crashes when I try to run it. Throwing up 'The NTVDM has encountered an illegal instruction  CS:0f3b Ip:ff5b OP: 0f 00 00 00 00'

Sorry for the delay, if you still need a hand
Can you do the following please

If you didn't pay for "Spyware Cleaner"
It doesn't have a good reputation
I would recommend that you uninstall it

Your way behind on Windows updates
Can you Download and install Service Pack 1a
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/express.mspx
Don't install SP2 at this time, you can do that after you are all clear of malware

After that is done

Can you redownload hijackthis and save it too a permanent folder on your harddrive
You can redownload it from my signature below

Run hijackthis again and post a fresh log

Can you also let me know what version of Ad-Aware you are running
If your unsure open Ad-Aware
Click on DETAILS under Initialization status
Let me know Ad-aware Ref. number and Internal build

sorry Steve I didn't see your reply sooner

Can you do the following please
Open Ad-Aware and click the Check for updates now link and then download updates
Don't run a scan yet

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Give the link time to load or try it twice, it may be busy
Don't run this yet, we'll need it in a bit

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We'll fix that later
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

==Download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
* Save it to your desktop or a folder

Please Save these instructions too a Notepad file on the desktop for reference
and/or Print this out

Run Pocket KillBox.exe

In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
Control + C

Killbox files to highlight between dotted lines
===================================================
C:\Program Files\MsConfigs\MsConfigs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetwork.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMD.COM
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tasklist.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskkill.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tracert.com
C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe

===================================================
*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer doesn't restart
Please Restart it now manually into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation

In safe mode

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- SpywareCleanerService

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Find and delete this folder
C:\Program Files\winupdates <-this folder
C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner <-folder

Navigate to the "Complete" folder and delete the contents and then the Complete folder itself

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files, when it's done
DECLINE to Log off or Restart when scan is done.

==Open Ewido trojan scanner
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Click on the Settings button on the right
Select "Scan Every File"
OK it and then click on the "Complete System Scan"
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  *3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

NOTE: When Ewido is running do NOT open any other Windows
Let it do it's job

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Open Ad-Aware
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

Restart back to Normal mode

Please post a fresh Hijackthis log and the report from Ewidos

Hi q,
Did all you asked and looking good so far.
The only deviation from your instruction was deleteing the spyware cleaner, probably cos I deleted it as you requested in your first reply.
Thank you for the lesson with many other lessons learned too!!!!
Stevie

Can you do the following please

Run hijackthis again and fix checked this entry with all other windows closed, including this one

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot

Restart your computer

Back in Windows
Can you do a search on your computer
When searching, under the advanced options ensure the bolded 3 options are checked which include search within hidden files and folders

Do a search for this file

If you find it can you right click on it and left click properties
Version tab if one and let me know what it's related too if possible
Also Date created
Take note at what location you find it

Can you go to this link
Give this site time to load
Jotti's Online Malware scan

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard drive
1310.exe
Right click on it  and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

Hello again
That scan shows it may be a bad guy

Can you do the following please
Navigate too
C:\WINDOWS\system32\1310.exe
Right click on and rename 1310.exe
to
1310.old

Afterwards
Run hijackthis again and fix checked the following with all other windows closed

F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe,1310.exe,

Restart your computer and post a fresh hijackthis log

Sorry for the delay
How's everything on your end?
It looks good

If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"

You should also consider visiting windows updates and installing SP2 and all other latest High Priority updates
