I may be offending some people here, but...
Why do people use 450 watt PSU\'s? Its comlpete and utter overkill.
I have the follwing configuration, on a 300 Watt:
PIII 450
ABIT BX board (not sure of the exact model)
ASUS 7100 Pure
3x IDE Hard Drives
1x IDE DVD
2x SCSI Hard Drives
1x SCSI Burner
1x SCSI Tape backup drive

I have no problems getting power to my devices, so what are 450 Watt PSU\'s being sold in desktops for?

Athlon\'s tend to use more power for the chip & board then a pIII, a 450 gives you plenty of upward room, and Fans tend to suck lots of power quickly

I\'d rather have too much power than not enough available.  A weak power supply is one of the causes of system instability (constant crashes, reboots, etc.).  And right now a 400watt is pretty cheap, not much more than a 300watt.  I\'d go with 400watt if I was building a new system (and I\'d go with 450watt if I saw one for about the same price as a 400watt).

Sounds like one of my systems

ABIT KA7100-RAID
Athlon 850
2 IBM 7200 RPM HDD\'s 15gb each
2 IBM 7200 RPM HDD\'s 40gb each
1 IDE DVD
1 SCSI CD Drive (Read only)
1 SCSI CD-RW
1 SCSI Autoloader
SB Live,
SCSI Card
MX550
3COM NIC
5 Fans (1 by drives, 1 bottom of case, 1 top of case, 2 on heat sink)
all running on a 350 Powersupply. I had my printer on a network, I needed to print and the system it was attached to was down, so I shutdown my system, moved the printer to mine, turned on the PC, It started to boot, when I turned on the printer (parallel) the (small) amount of power it drew blew my power supply. I now own a 450 and couldn\'t be happier

So be careful when you scimp on a power supply it can bite you in te end

Why do you have 5 hard drives on a home PC?  Talk about overkill.  I agree though that 450 watts is overkill on most home PC\'s but like a previous poster put it; its better to have more than you need than be on the brink of not enough.
