x800xl / power supply
« on: October 09, 2005, 08:51:22 PM »
Hi guys... I'm new here =)...
Well anyways.. i've a big problem, but its strange and i dont really know what the problem is.
It started like this:
I got a new computer, 3ghz, 1gbramddr, x800xl...
It was everything going well, i could play great games and stuff and it was all working well execpt for the fact that MY COMPUTER FREEZED once in a while for no reason... which means that it freezed even when i wasnt on the computer so i COULDNT be the VIDEO CARD.
But that was fine, i wasnt much worried about it... But then one day i turned my computer on and left it on for a while, played some games and stuff... and then pressed RESTART... it turned of and when it turned on again it the monitor wouldnt turn on... i didnt understand, so i left it off for a while and about an hour later i turned it on and it worked... but now i was worried so i pressed restart again and again the same thing happened, i wait about an hour and turned it on again, checked to see if there was something wrong with the video card, played games and stuff, and nothing happened, then i turned it off, when i tried to turn it on again it wouldnt... then i thought it could be the monitor so i tried another monitor on, but it wasnt the monitor.
The other day i tried again and the same thing would happen, so i put another video card on my computer and turned it on, it turned on, then i restarted it and it was working... now that made me wonder... and it makes no sense to me, now the computer is not freezing anymore and it doesnt do that monitor thing either.
Now there are only 2 things that could be responsible for that: The video card and the PSU.
The video card could be responsible but it doesnt make any sense because i didnt even play games with it, i played about 10 times in 2 months (thats how old the video card is) and it never smelled like burned metal or stopped working or restarted the pc because of overheating (never got over 60 degrees).
And then there's the PSU which is a 300W one, and smelled kind of bad one day when i played a game, but maybe it could've just been my mind or something... those are the facts... now what do u guys think?...
thanks guys!!!!

Yep, seems like its the power supply.

calculate your wattage here: http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

If you need a suggestion on a new one, just post here and I can dig up a few quality ones.
