Trojan.Vundo can't remove
« on: October 10, 2005, 11:39:00 PM »
Hi, I can't remove the trojan.vundo.  I've tried Norton's download says it's not on my computer. Tried in safe mode as well still said it wasnt on my computer. But it is a continuous alert showing it's infected that stays up from Norton Internet Security.  Says the trojan.vundo is in file C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutr.dll  -Really annoying.  Any help on how to remove. PLEASE?  **Here is my hijack this log.

Trojan.Vundo can't remove
« Reply #1 on: October 11, 2005, 12:16:58 AM »
Hi,
     I tried previous advice from guestsolo on a previous forum.  I appeared to have the same files on my computer but just ending in vtutt.dll instead of mmllm.dll as the prior forum discussed.  I ran the kill vundo and fixed the files.  It appears to have solved the problem.
     No new trojun.vundo warnings from Norton (little help they've been) I've scanned with active scan and posted the results, as previously requested, as well as, a new Hijack this log.  What do you think?   Does everything look OK?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks for help.

Trojan.Vundo can't remove
« Reply #2 on: October 11, 2005, 12:33:08 AM »
Can you redownload Hijackthis from my signature below and save it too a permanent file on your drive

You have probably already run VundFix.exe and removed the one bad file

Can you do the following

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run this yet, we'll need it in a bit
Alternate download location if having trouble with the first link

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Print these instructions out

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for another explanation

In safe mode
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Find and delete the following file if it exists
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll

==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files
DECLINE to Log off or Restart when scan is done.

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  *3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyw - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebyw.dll

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode

post a fresh hijackthis log and the whole report from Ewido's

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Hi, I could not delete the C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll  file, it said it was in use by another program. Could not fix above listed 02-BHO (non name), 020- Winlogon Notify:gebyw  ....in Hijack This log when checked.  I ran Ewido scan and posted new Hijack this log.  Is this a virus as well? It is still there, but I am having no warnings from Norton. Any help appreciated. Thankyou for help.

Sorry for the delay

Can you do the following please
You didn't redownload hijackthis from my signature below, can you please do that now and save it too a permanent folder on your drive
Only run hijackthis from this new location

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals and extract it to your desktop. Do not run this now as We'll use it later

Download the Killbox .
Save it to your desktop

Download FixVundo.reg
 and save it to your desktop. Do not run this now

Print the rest of these instructions or save them too notepad
==Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Double-click on procexp.exe which you extracted too desktop earlier from
SysInternal
    ==In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double-click on
winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen.
Click on the Threads tab at the top.

==Once you see this screen click on each instance of the DLL
gebyw.dll.
And click on the kill button.
"If you see any files listed that are the same name but end with .bak or .ini or are the name in reverse, you can kill those as well."

==After you have killed all of the instances of the DLL under winlogon click on the OK button.

==Now double-click on explorer.exe
Select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of the DLL
gebyw.dll
 Once they are highlighted click on the Kill button like you did in the previous step.

==When this is done, click on the OK button again.
Now run HijackThis again, close all windows, and press the Scan button.

Place a check next to each of the entries

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyw.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyw - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebyw.dll

==Once all the entries are checked, press the Fix checked button and then exit HijackThis.

==Now double-click on the FixVundo.reg file that you downloaded earlier and allow it to merge to the registry

==Double-click on Killbox.exe that you downloaded and extracted earlier. Select the "Replace on Reboot" option.
Additionally choose the "Use dummy" options
 Then enter the full path to the DLL  into the Full path of file to delete field.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebyw.dll

Click the red circle with the white X and select Yes to the Replace on reboot and allow to Restart
Or restart the computer manually

Allow to restart back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Run another scan with Hijackthis and post a fresh log

I did the above as instructed but when running procexp.exe I found no files to kill matching the instructions and in Hijackthis log the file c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gebyw.dll , is no longer there as you can see from log.  Has it changed names or something?  Any help appreciated. Thanks so much.

Trojan.Vundo can't remove
« Reply #7 on: October 12, 2005, 06:41:12 PM »
Your still infected, but let's try killing this thing again

Can you do the following please
I need you too disable your Spyware's Realtime protections, so they won't interfere with any fixes we try

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Options>>> Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Spyware Cleaner>>I've never used the program, and probably never will
It's not a recommended Spyware cleaner and protection program
If you didn't pay for this I would access your add/remove programs and uninstall it
If you decide to keep it, ensure you disable it's realtime protections

Afterwards

Follow the next instructions closely
Print this out please
In the event you don't have a Printer, Save these instructions to notepad for reference
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files

        Before this thing has a chance to morph, and continue infecting you
        Can you please do the following

        Run KillBox.exe

        In the killbox program, select the "Delete on Reboot" option.
        Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
        Control + C

        Killbox files to highlight between dotted lines
        ===================================================
        C:\WINDOWS\GatorPdpLoudInstaller.log
        C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkjg.dll
        C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkli.dll
        C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlljh.dll
        C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmj.dll

        ===================================================
        *Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
        *Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. And allow to reboot your computer

        If your computer doesn't restart
        Please restart it manually

        Back in windows

        ==Open Windows CleanUp!>>START>>programs>>Cleanup!
        Click on the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files
        DECLINE to Log off or Restart when scan is done.

        Run hijackthis again and post a fresh log

        We'll get this thing, sometimes it takes a few tries

        Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

        Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

        That looks better
        Can you still do the following

        Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

        O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C} - C:\Program Files\AOL Toolbar\toolbar.dll (file missing)

        O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowWnd] ShowWnd.exe

        O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot

        After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
        Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
        OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

        Restart your computer

        Can you please run one last scan at Panda's to ensure that you are clean
        If nothing found, let me know

        Afterwards, post a fresh hijackthis log

        Looks good
        You can go delete this folder made by killbox
        C:\!KillBox <-this folder

        If everything is running better, please do the following
        You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
        This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
        How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

        Once System Restore is reenabled

        You should set up protection against future attacks
        SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
        *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
        *Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
        *Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
        After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

        IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
        Here is a tutorial and download link
        TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
        Download link

        With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
        Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
        SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
        IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2

        Note: You can now go back and reenable Microsoft's Anti-Spyware realtime protection if you disabled it earlier
