Help with certain problem
« on: October 16, 2005, 10:44:51 PM »
Greetings. Over the last two days, I have noticed a decrease in my hard drive space. I ran a virus-scan using Kaspersky's and noted that there was a hidden folder in my [C:\Documents and Settings\<user>] and the folder's name was "Complete." This folder contained several ".zip" files that I am sure I did not download.

Yesterday, I came across this thread, which addressed the same problem I am having: http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19299

I followed all of the directions there. Here is my current HijackThis! log:

I will post my ewido Security Suite infection cleaning log if I am prompted to do so. While scanning through Security Suite, I found another folder in my [C:\] titled "Uploads." This folder also contained several ".zip" files that I am sure I did not download. I deleted this folder in Safe Mode, however, and I do not think it has returned. Also note that using the directions that were given to me in the thread I linked (http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19299), I deleted the "Complete" folder in Safe Mode. When I rebooted into Normal Mode, however, it had appeared again.

Another problem of mine is that I cannot open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete (or Ctrl+Shift+Esc). I can, however, open Task Manager in Safe Mode. I ran both AVG (Free version) and Kasperky's, only to come across an infected "winlogi.exe." I cannot delete this file, because I have not been permitted the access. I think this ("winlogi.exe") is what is not allowing me to open Task Manager.

Any help is greatly appreciated. =)

Hi Scrubbs, can you do the following please

==Download and UNZIP to desktop
BFU.zip
So you now have BFU.exe extracted to desktop

Please Download and UNZIP to desktop
[attachment=400:attachment]
Make sure you unzip this so you now have p2pnetwork.bfu extracted to desktop

Check for updates with Ewido, close it out later

Can you do the following please
Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
Disconnect from the Internet

I need you too disable your Spyware's realtime protections so they won't interfere with any fixes we are trying
First
SPYBOT=Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident
Uncheck only Resident Tea Timer
Allow the change

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Options>>Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Please keep the above 2 disabled until you are clean

If you didn't intentionally install Viewpoint toolbar
Access your Add/Remove programs and remove it
If you didn't intentionally install Weatherbug remove it also

Addtionally, it's never a good idea to run more than on Anti-virus software on your computer
This can cause conflicts and decrease system performance
I see Kaspersky's and AVG running
You should choose which one your happiest with and uninstall the other

Afterwards
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for a more detailed explanation
Stay disconnected from the Internet

Double click to run BFU.exe
Use the "Open Script file" button (the folder icon next to Scriptfile to execute)
Navigate to p2pnetwork.bfu on your desktop
Right click p2pnetwork.bfu and choose Select
In Brute Force Uninstaller select Execute
Let it finish then Exit

Find and delete this file if found
c:\counter.cab <-this file

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\windows\SYSTEM\blank.htm

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page

Post a fresh hijackthis log and the new report from Ewido's

EDIT>>I forgot to complete my instructions to disable TeaTimer, I've fixed that now

Thank you for the quick reply, questolo.

The problem seems to have been solved, since I can open up Task Manager again and there are no "Complete" or "Uploads" folders to be seen anywhere in the aforementioned destinations.

Here is the new HijackThis! logfile after I made all the said changes:

If you can note any problem with the HijackThis! log, also, that would be welcome, as I have gone through the processes you have requested..

Can we just make sure you do the following please
Quote

If you don't disable them, you will have to ALLOW any changes we are making

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {04079851-5845-4dea-848C-3ECD647AA554} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {CA034DCC-A580-4333-B52F-15F98C42E04C} -

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer, come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running

Sorry about that. I did not catch the little bit about SpyBot.

That looks better

If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2

After you do the above, go back and enable your spyware protections realtime protection
Could you post one last fresh hijackthis log, let's make sure it's still clean

Well, here's the thing. I already had System Restore disabled. I took your advice and I enabled it and rebooted.

I downloaded and installed Spyware Blaster and IE-Spyad 2. Is there anyway to make Spyware Blaster run as a background program?

Either way, here is the new log:

That's the great thing about SpywareBlaster
Doesn't need to run as a background application
It's sets registry entries to help protect you
The same goes for IE-Spyad2

With Micosoft's anti-spyware realtime protection
SpywareBlaster>>Ie-spyad
Keep your AV up to date you should have good protection

Forgot to add, make sure you keep SP2's firewall enabled

Or, if you would like a better firewall,
I like Sygates Free version
But after installation you will want to disable xp's built in
Not good having more than one Firewall running

Yeah, I have SP2's firewall enabled. =)

Now, as a final question...

I use a browser called Maxthon. You've probably heard of it.. If not, it's basically a browser that is built around Internet Explorer.

What I want to know is that will the changes I applied to IE carry over to Maxthon?

The protection that IE-Spyad and SpywareBlaster supply should help you too
See the following link
