Are you still experiencing problems?

Download DLLCompare

Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com
Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long

Click the Compare button to start the next process. This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post it back here

OK. Yes, still having problems (it's always "a friend's" computer, isn't it...)

Ran DllCompare. Had 11 files in the lower frame. Rescan made them all go away.

Here's the log:

*    DLLCompare Log version(1.0.0.127)
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

Please download L2m9xfix from one of these two locations:
GeeksToGo
Noidea.us

Save it to the desktop and run it.  Extract the files, and then open the l2m9xfix folder you just created and run RunThis.bat.

A window will open, and your desktop will disappear, then reappear.  Please be patient until the batch says it is completed.

Then please restart your computer, and post the entire text of the log.txt file which should be in the same folder as RunThis.bat.

Also, redownload Hijackthis from my signature below and save it too a permanent folder on your drive
Run hijackthis from this new location and post a fresh log

How's everything running on your end?

If you haven't run these tools thru the computer yet, can you do the following

Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process
===================================

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and download all updates
Click the Search & Destroy button on the left
Check for Problems---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

Note: If you get bad checksum error when checking for updates, do a new search for updates and try a different location from the drop down menu

RESTART the computer to finish the cleaning process

Come back and let me know how the machines running

Whew! After all that (and uninstalling Zone Alarm FW) I think we're good to go.

The machine seems much quieter and no longer seems to be trying to do the icannnews thing.

Many, many thanks. We'll be raising a glass of homemade plum wine in your honor.

Just on my way out,

For some final cleanup
If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"

IE-Spyad or Spywareblaster don't run in the background
They set registry settings to help prevent malware

Also, hold onto to Ad-Aware and Spybot
Check for updates and run scans every couple of weeks
Ad-aware>>Smart system scan can be run, it's quicker, do a full once in awhile
With spybot you should do the following,
Click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top menu bar
Do this after every update

Little concerned about the following
Quote
(and uninstalling Zone Alarm FW)
What are you using for a firewall now?
It's important to have some kind of firewall protection when online

I prefer Sygates free version, if you don't have a Firewall to install and are in need of one
Download Sygates Version 2710
from that direct link
It's the previous version of Sygates' that is compatible with Windows ME

P.S. That's not my dog in the Avatar, just a generic pic
My dogs are black lab X Husky and a Chitzu >>The Chitzu the boss  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
