Computer Hanging/freezing
« on: November 08, 2005, 09:54:54 AM »
http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' /> Hello all...'ve never been on this site bfore, and I'm  not greatly tech savvy...so please excuse me if I make any stupid mistakes or ask silly questions!! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

I've been having a recurring problem with my PC at home- At times it just freezes, and absolutely nothing responds (pointer doesnt move, ctrl+alt+del unresponsive). occasionally when this happens the light for the hard drive comes on and stays on.

This happens at any time, whether I'm runnin many programs or just one WIndows application (it happened once when I was using Word). When this happens I have no choice but to do power offand power back on, and then sometimes it fails to restart. If I leave it alone for some hours, it will boot up again, but the same problem often occurs.

When it first happned, I was on a dialup connection and it eventually ended up wit my hard drive failing. Now I have a broadband link and I would hate for the same to happen again...I have AVG and Avast installed, as well as Spybot and Adaware, all with the most recent updates. Scanning using all of the above has not helped (Spybot & Adaware have picked up some stuff but seemed to have dealt with them).

The problem is usually preceded by a "spinning" sound, similar to what you hear when you first put a CD into the drive. Can anyone help me please??? I dont want to have to replace my HDD againand lose all my stff..again!!!

I don't think your problem is malware, but possibly not enough juice to run this machine  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Can you do the following
It's never a good idea to run more than one Anti-virus software on your computer
This can cause a decrease in system performance and conflict with each other
I would advise you to uninstall either AVG or Avast
You choose which one, I like both so it's a tossup

Afterwards, restart your computer
Come back here and post a hijackthis log
Here's the instructions

Quote
AMD Athlon1.2GHz
WIn XP SP2
128meg RAM

128 ram, that's not that much to be running XP
I wouldn't think that spending more money on a harddrive is your problem
I would get more Ram
Your computer would be much happier with 512 minimum

But let's see that hijackthis log and go from there

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I wouldn't bring it to the same guy that fixed it before

The paid version of Bearshare is malware free
The free version is bundled with malware
Up to you to keep it

I would still open Bearshare and look under the options to disable it from running on startup

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WhenUSave] "C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe"

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your add/remove programs via Control panel
Uninstall
WhenU Save

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Delete the following folder if found
C:\Program Files\Save <-this folder

Post a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running

How's everything?
You would still be happier with an additional 256 mb ram
to bring you up to 384

I still suggest 512, but that's up to you

Have you done a defrag and a disk cleanup lately for regular maintenance?

I see you have Sygate's installed, I don't blame you, I like it too
But don't run XP's firewall at the same time, this can cause conflicts

Good work paladintrini  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

You should look into these 2 free tools to help prevent spyware and other malware
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2 as well

I'll lock this topic, if you need it reopened, please Pm myself or the site admin and supply a link to this thread

Stay safe
