Do I need to reinstall XP due to attack on my PC?
« on: November 14, 2005, 11:25:29 AM »
I started having problems when Adobe Photoshop would not open after going through it's opening splash screen. The PC that it was installed on is not connected to the net, however, may have been online about a year ago. Occasional 'glitchy' problems, but not catastrophic. I tried to d/l Adobe updates, and my PC went crazy. Suddenly I have all these DLL messages(about 15) re: bad images......C:\windows\system32\kbdml.dll not valid window image, and to check my original XP file.
And a message C:\windows\inetdata\services.exe where I am told to delete the instruction from the registry, or replace instruction.
I wish I would have found this forum earlier. Let me kn ow if this is fixable, or should I just call a professional in to  handle this? I also started the process of re-installing XP, but it never actually completed the installation, and was aborted.
I have run various spyware and antivirus in safe mode, and have kept that PC offline.
Like I said, wish I would have found this forum sooner.
I've copied my HijackThis log below.
Thanks!

Do I need to reinstall XP due to attack on my PC?
« Reply #1 on: November 14, 2005, 02:26:10 PM »
Can you do the following please, I want to see what we can cleanup
I need you too download a few tools

Download and save to your Desktop
FxAgentB.exe by Symantec's
don't run it now, we will use it later:

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run this yet, we'll need it in a bit

Download and Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Ensure you have this latest version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
When installing, Ad-Aware may prompt to update, Allow it but don't run a scan yet
After Ad-aware had been installed and updated I need you to do the following
Follow the link to download and install
VX2 Cleaner Plug-in.
After the plugin is installed
Close out Ad-Aware

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Now that you have the tools
Let's try some cleanup

Please Print this out or save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop
Disconnect from the Internet
Stay disconnected until we are done all the below instructions
Additionally, know how to start in safe mode beforehand
I've supplied a link below if your unsure

Double-click the FxAgentB removal tool by Symantec to run it.
The program will scan your entire hard drive - this may take a while. When it is done, it will generate a log file called FxAgentB.log - save that information as you will need to paste it here later.
RESTART your computer when Done

Back in Windows
Run Ad-Aware 1.06
Click on Add-ons in the lefthand column.  Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool.  Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given.  Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again.  This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next.  Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects").  Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK".  Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next".  Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

At this time, can you please
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for an alternate method

In safe mode
Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bxuphqj] C:\WINDOWS\System32\vqxwebw.exe r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Munj] C:\WINDOWS\System32\mzg.exe

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmeup.cc
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.skoobidoo.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmeup.cc (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.skoobidoo.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted IP range: 195.190.118.157 (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\System32\kbdml.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Restart back to Normal mode

Back in Window
Run Hijackthis again and post a fresh log
Also include the Whole report from Ewidos"
Additionally, include the log from Symantec's>>FxAgentB.log

Tolo,

Thank you for your help.

I followed your instruction, and somewhere along the way, my problems seem to have been cleaned!

I'm sure that you saved me a trip to the PC Doctor, so I will be contributing to the site.

I have included the logs below. The FX AgentB program didn't seem to run correctly(it was looking for FX Backdoor Agent??)

Anyway, here they are. Thank you again. I'm curious as to what the culprit was, if you can(or have time to) comment.

Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool 1.0.1.2

Do I need to reinstall XP due to attack on my PC?
« Reply #4 on: November 17, 2005, 09:35:48 AM »
Questolo,

PC is running great so far. Have not put it back through a workout(for work), but it boots up quickly, and has none of the prior problems.

Should I occasionally run CleanUp! to get rid of old temp files, etc.? Is there a pinned post with suggestions on routine maintenance? I know that there are DL software suggestions.

Thank you again for your help.

Here is the HijackThis log as requested.

Jim

Do I need to reinstall XP due to attack on my PC?
« Reply #5 on: November 18, 2005, 11:50:06 PM »
Yes please, run Cleanup on a regular basis

Also do the following
If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>>reboot>> and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2 as well

Speaking of SP2, you should get the latest Service pack and keep up on all High priority updates
This is important in keeping your system secure also

Remember, SP2 now has a built in popupblocker for IE

My bad, I never even noticed that you weren't running any Anti-Virus software on this computer anymore

Do you need a free solution?
If your not happy with Avast
There are alternatives
Ewido doesn't replace an AV, but hold onto it however
It's not safe being without an active AV
