Trojan.vundo
« on: November 18, 2005, 05:08:56 AM »
Hello,

I have a problem with trying to remove Trojan.Vundo from my laptop. Object name is C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnn.dll . I've tried all of the Norton Antivirus 2005 removal tips, including the Vundo removal tool running in safe mode (the tool came back with NO trojan.vundo present), updated Norton Antivrus 2005 running in safe mode, Norton Autoprotect OFF and Windows XP System Restore OFF, and shutting off my computer and all connections for several minutes inbetween,  Also, I have updated Windows well beforehand as well. Another problem that was occuring before Vundo was Winfix pop-ups, but they seemed to cease when the Trojan.Vundo came up.

I also checked the Windows Registry and found nothing there as per Norton Manual Removal instructions.

I am at a total loss about this. Even a friend has run Spybot through my computer without any success.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

WSeto

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
*Double-click
VundoFix.exe to extract the files
*This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

Please print these instructions or save them too notepad for reference

Please Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware's realtime protections so it won't interfere in any fixes we try.
Keep this disabled until we know you are clean
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Options>>Settings
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE without networking
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for an alternative method

*Once in safe mode

Open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

It should look like this
Quote

Press enter to continue....

* At this point press enter one time.

*After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
*Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.

Back in Windows
Then, please run this online virus scan:  ActiveScan
Once loaded, choose to Scan "Local Disks"
Once the scan is complete

When I ran Vundofix, it couldn't find the two files as written. However, the problem seems to have gone away. The Activescan and new Hijackthis are:

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools Section
Open Delete File on Reboot

In the File name field
Copy and paste the following bold text and then click the OPEN button

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjh.dll

Hijackthis should prompt that the file will be deleted on Reboot and to reboot now
Don't allow to reboot yet

Instead
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnn.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnnn - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnn.dll (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer
Make sure this file is gone
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjh.dll

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

Hi again,

I couldn't find this file: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnnn.dll (file missing) , only this: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} , so I didn't check this option.

Activescan of local disks came up with "no viruses or other malicious softaware has been found"... terrific!

hijackthis had:

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {79A576C4-B7A9-47EC-B57C-2CE5CA6ECC6A} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer and let me know how everythings running
Post back one last hijackthis log

Looks good

If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link
Scroll down too IE-SPYAD (original) or
IE-SPYAD2>>Use one or the other

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply click the "enable all protection"
IE-Spyad is compatible with SP2

Go back and reenable Microsoft anti-spyware realtime protections

NOTE: You have some unneeded entries running on startup
They are optional for you too leave them, but they can use resources
Of course leave your AV>>firewall>>Mic AntiSpyware running
But items such as Office Findfast.exe and OSA.exe are not needed
Do some research on whay you need on startup from this link
http://castlecops.com/modules.php?name=StartupList
Don't disable something unless your sure!
I don't recommend using msconfig or hijackthis for this
I like this small utility,
Codestuff's Starter
Uncheck an item to disable on startup
Or look within a program first to disable on startup
Eg....
Code: [Select]
RealPlay.exe

System Tray icon for RealPlayer. If you subsequently start RealPlayer manually it adds itself back to the start-up list. You can stop this from happening by right-clicking on the tray icon and disabling StartCenter via Preferences
