PLEASE HELP! I HAVE A WORM!
« Reply #20 on: December 04, 2005, 10:42:58 AM »
Could you do the following

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg]

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add or merge to the registry

Reboot your computer

Let me see one last hijackthis log
How's everything now?

NOTE: Your new Anti-Virus comes with 6 different scanners
Not all may be needed on startup
Do NOT uninstall AVAST, but right click on the Icon by the clock and select On access protection
Then click on DETAILS
You should see all the scanners
DO NOT Terminate either Standard shield or Internet Mail shields

If you don't use OUTLOOK>>Whick is not the same as Outlook Express
You can terminate the Outlook scanner
If you don't use Instant messaging>>Terminate that process
P2P>>If you don't use terminate

You can find more info about the scanners here
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I would also leave Auto updating enabled
Avast will check home once a day for updates on first startup of each day

« Reply #22 on: December 04, 2005, 10:56:15 AM »
Well, the log looks clean
Not malware related anymore

Did you see my edit above about Avast
The above note is just for computer startup performance
I use it on my old P2 350 computer with no slowdowns

Did you Defrag the system?

EDIT>>Now that we cleaned that registry entry
Can you run the BFU fix one more time please
See if it makes a difference

Yea i did all that. I now have Avast on the computer and did a disk defrag. it is running better, its just takin a little longer than it used to to open programs. It is definetly 10x better than it was when we started this though. I really appriciate your help.

somethin is still using up like 80-95% of my system. i have a meter on the desktop and it is showing that the user is only using between 5-15% most of the time. Where as before this all started the system would rarely use that much.

If so, to be safe, can I see a hijackthis log from another profile

Just saw your edit
What's using all the CPU
Can you open your taskmanager and take note please

95% is not too bad
That seems ok

If it was anything else but System Idle you might have problems
But with System Idle
the higher the better

Svchost.exe is a legit file if running from the system32 folder
Don't attempt to delete it
and it's normal to have more than one running in your processes

But something may be conflicting
Now that you ended the process tree on svchost

Can i see a new hijackthis log please
Maybe we can see a change in the log

« Reply #30 on: December 04, 2005, 12:10:07 PM »
Can you try something
I have to step out for a bit, let me know how it goes
I see PCTools Spyware Doctor and Microsoft Anti-Spyware installed

Are you using the realtime protections from both?

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Options>>Settings
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button
Then click the Autoupdater in the left pane and uncheck
the 3 boxes on the right and Save and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows
MAS shouldn't start but if it does
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Is CPU usage still high?
