Friends PC is sick, could use help fixing it
« on: December 01, 2005, 10:08:29 PM »
Could I get some help curing my friends sick PC please?

I'm not sure what's wrong but I saw a task running called pokapoka79.exe and evidently it's a virus based on things I read on this web site.  Internet Explorer has all sorts of problems running on the PC - pop ups all the time, and only one copy seems to be able to be started - try to start another and it never gets going.  Sometime's it won't shut down either.

I ran hijackthis already.  Here's the log file contents:

I'm a bit short on time tonight
But can I get you started on a cleanup
Then we'll finish up later

Download the following

Download and save to your desktop
AimFix.exe
Don't run it yet

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Just leave it there for now!

Can you print the rest of these instructions please
Or save them too notepad for reference
Close all other windows, Including this one

Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
This will create a new folder called LQfix on your desktop.
Open the folder and doubleclick ClickThis.bat
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

Attempted to follow your directions as best I could.

FYI after the system boots instead of showing the background picture it shows "Active Desktop Recovery" and gives a choice to "Restore my Active Desktop".  For now I've ignored the option and have just followed your directions.

« Reply #3 on: December 03, 2005, 01:09:38 AM »
Let's try a little more cleanup
Let me know how everything's running after this

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Select Safe mode from the Startup menu

   1.  Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel
   2. Click Performance and Maintenance
   3. Click Administrative Tools
   4. Double click Services Scroll
   5. down and highlight "Command Service"
   6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
   7. Click the STOP button.
   8. Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar
   9. Click OK

Find and delete this folder
C:\WINNT\U3VlIE1vcnJpcw <-this folder

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: Well Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it do it's job

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:
The below are not malware, but not needed on startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntdll.dll] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Back in Hijackthis>>Open the Misc tools section
Open the "Delete an NT service"
In the open field,
Copy and paste or type the following and then hit OK

cmdService

Restart back to Normal mode

Back in Windows

Friends PC is sick, could use help fixing it
« Reply #4 on: December 03, 2005, 08:27:47 AM »
After following your directions I can tell some definite improvements in the system.  For one thing system startup seemed noticebly faster.  Also, I can actually start two instances of IE at one time now.  The number of things popping up seems to have slowed down also but has not completely subsided.  For example, some pop up that looks like a small "blue screen of death" appeared right after I started IE that looks something like this:

> Spyware or Adware may be damaging your computer.

> If you have downloaded music online or visisted adult website, Spyware may be running in your computer.  Spyware may cause slow computer speeds, unwanted pop up ads or personal identy theft.

> Click "OK' to scan your PC now.

OK

I just closed the dialog but the owner of this PC might not do that when I return it to them.

Some other IE screen popped up also with the following link in the title bar: http://cache.trafficmp.com/tmpad/content/p...1105/75ron.html

However the window/dialog itself just appeared as a gray rectangle.  There was no other text other than the URL that was in the title bar for the window.

Thank you very much for your help so far.

Below are the fresh hijackthis log and report from Ewido that you requested:

I missed a couple but Ewido got them for me
I think I was to much of a hurry yesterday

Can you do the following please
Download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Print the rest of this or save too a notepad file for reference

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.type2find.com/sp2.php

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpamBlocker] C:\Program Files\SpamBlockerUtility\Bin\4.6.1.0\SbOEAddOn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Spam Blocker for Outlook Express] C:\PROGRA~1\SPAMBL~1\Bin\461~1.0\SBInst.exe

O9 - Extra button: Freeprod Toolbar - {77FBF9B8-1D37-4FF2-9CED-192D8E3ABA6F} - C:\Program Files\Freeprod Toolbar\freeprod.dll
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Freeprod Toolbar - {77FBF9B8-1D37-4FF2-9CED-192D8E3ABA6F} - C:\Program Files\Freeprod Toolbar\freeprod.dll

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Access your add/Remove programs and remove if found

HotBar
SpamBlockerUtility
Freeprod Toolbar
Maxifiles

Reboot your computer into SAFE MODE again

Find and delete the following folders if found
C:\Program Files\SpamBlockerUtility
C:\Program Files\Freeprod Toolbar
 C:\Program Files\Common Files\Oem Common
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InetGet
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InetGet2

Double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.  Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat.  Follow the prompts.

Reboot back to Normal mode

Post The entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
Also post a fresh hijackthis log

Not seeing any pop ups right now so things seem even better than before.

How close am I to having a cleaned up system?

Thanks for all the help!

That's looking good Dale

Can I ask you too download a couple more tools
Hang onto these please
I would hold onto Ewido and CleanUp! too

SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection...."

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and download all updates
Click on the Immunize button>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Do that  after every update
Then
Click the Search & Destroy button on the left
Check for Problems---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish the cleaning process
NOTE: If you get a bad checksum error when checking for updates
Search for updates again and try a different download location from the drop down menu

Come back here one last time and let me know how everythings running
But your log looks good now

EDIT>>> Does the users version of Symantec's have Firewall software?
And is it enabled?
How are they connected to the Net?

Hi,

The system seems to be in great shape now.  Thank you very much.

I don't know for sure but I believe the user simply connects their PC directly to their cable modem with no router in between.  As for a firewall they only have Norton's Antivirus software, I don't see a Firewall option, so I'm guessing they don't have one.

I set up SpywareBlaster and Spybot as you suggested.  What do you think about me downloading and installing ZoneAlarm for them as their Firewall protection?

Thanks again for all your help,
Dale

Zonealarm is a good Firewall
One that I recommend in this link
http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15894

I like Sygate, but Symantec's just bought them out
I know you can still download it from the link I have posted, but it won't be supported any longer

I removed Kerio's from my recommended firewall's because it was due to end the free firewall at the end of this month
But apparently it will be taken over by SunBelt and still supported

Only use one firewall>>My Sygate still works, but won't update or no online support
Kerio>>If you would like to try it, I can link you too it
I'm going to repost it later, depending on what Sunbelt does with it

I know many use the free version of ZoneAlarm
It's good, I haven't used it in years however, not sure if it's heavy on resources or not

If you would like to chance Kerio's
It's a very good firewall, claimed by many other users around the net of this product
Here's a link to explain
http://www.kerio.com/kerio-pr-us-2005-2885.html
You will also find the download link to the Kerio Personal firewall under Products
I may try it on my other machine  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Or give Outpost a try
Again, I remind you, only use one

But definitely get a Firewall on that machine, no matter which one you choose

I'm sending the patient home tonight.  ;-)

I appreciate all the great help.  The person the PC belongs to wanted to reimburse me for my time.  I told her thanks but no thanks and to instead make a donation to your fight against malware.

Take care,
Dale
