Can you do the following please

If you have Windows XP Home edition
Use this download and save it to your desktop
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spencer.greys...XPHomeFiles.exe

If you have Windows XP Pro edition
Use this download and save it to your desktop
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spencer.greys.../XPProfiles.exe

If your unsure go to START>>RUN>>type in winver
Hit OK

Once the correct file is saved
Double click on the file that you placed on your desktop and Run it
Let it self extract needed files to the
 C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
By clicking the UNZIP button
Which should be set by default

Now try running FindQoologic again with the instructions I posted earlier and post the new log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Let's do a bit more cleaning, then let me know how things are running

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
But make sure to include REGEDIT4 and below in the code box
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop, we'll need it in a bit

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open "Delete File on Reboot"
In the File name field
Copy and paste the following path to the file in bold below

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CKJSVVD.EXE
Then click the OPEN button
Hijackthis should prompt you that the file will be deleted on Reboot and to restart the computer
Don't restart yet

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Can you run FindQoologic again and post the new log
After you have done that

Can you do the following again please
Delete your L2Mfix folder and L2Mfix.exe

Make sure that Symantec's Script blocking is disabled for this fix to work
I previously instructed you how to do this

Redownload L2mfix from one of these locations

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start.  Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

Sounds good
If you don't want/need the B-H toolbar installed, I would opt to uninstall it from add/remove programs

I don't like the entries related too Sony Rootkit infection
It appears that SpySweeper together with Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool
Have made this rootkit totally visible, may of fixed the vulnerability too
Google Sony Rootkit infection and you will find lot's of info about it
I can't believe Sony stooped this low to make computers very vulnerable

The old uninstaller that Sony supplied, left security risks
The new tool that they have made public appears to remove most of it, will leave behind some entries more than likely
But it seems to be the best method I can find at the moment

I would choose to try Sony's uninstaller,
They give you a choice to use the "Update the XCP software on your computer."

or "Completely uninstall the XCP software and associated content protection files."
Here's the link
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/updates.html

The uninstaller is at the bottom of the page
The XCP software tool is available for download here as an EXECUTABLE (2.3 MB
Save this exe to your desktop
If you choose to download the zip file, make sure to extract it first to the desktop
Then close all other windows and run the tool
Reboot the computer afterwards

I would choose to do the complete uninstall
Then take advantage of
SONY BMG XCP
EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The link is found on the same page
Sony's removing, or has removed all CD's from stores, including online store with this protection on it
Lawsuits are pending against them!
This is something you don't want on your computer

Here's some more info about it
http://news.com.com/Sony+offers+new+CDs,+M..._3-5960987.html
Keep in mind, I believe they are still directing their comments about the first uninstaller by Sony
Which did a poor job of patching this

NOTE: I hope you choose to Uninstall completely
If you do, don't put the CD's with this protection on it back into your computer
The exchange program will supply you with a link to MP3 downloads and ship your new CD's at a later time
Quote
Please allow 3-6 weeks for delivery of the replacement(s). Consumers who choose to receive MP3 files in addition to replacement CD(s) will receive an e-mail with a link to the MP3 downloads upon our receipt and verification of your XCP CD(s)

After you have done the above
Go over to Windows updates and make sure your right up to date on all HighPriority updates
If any too download, do so and reboot the computer again if prompted

Let me know how it goes, can you post a fresh hijackthis log afterwards, thanks

In addition, I just want to check on something
Can you also
Open l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

Thank you for removing that infection<<sorry I mean to call it that
But that's what it is, take advantage of Sony's Exchange program
Don't put those CD's back in your computer again
They can be played on your home stereo or vehicle, but not on your comp.

Let's make sure this doesn't happen again
Thanks for your support in this problem  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Can you do me favor please before we do some final cleanup
This file found by L2Mfix
 msupda~1.dll Fri Dec 23 2005 8:46:28p ..... 36,864 36.00 K
I suspect it may still be bad

Can you go to this site
Jotti's Online Malware scan
Give this site time to load if busy

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard drive
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll <-this file
I assume that is the name of the file, can you take a close look please

Right click on it  and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scans back here please

If you can't see them on your harddrive
You may have to
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Can you do the following please

Start Killbox
Click on Tools in the menu bar and then click "Delete Temp Files"
In the Full path to file to delete, copy and paste the next line in bold

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll

Select the radio button to "Delete File on Reboot"
Additionally select "Unregister .dll before deleting"

Click the Red Circle with the White X

OK the prompts to delete on reboot and allow the computer to reboot
If the computer doesn't reboot, please do so manually

Back in Windows
Make sure that msupdate32.dll is gone

Let me know how everythings running

EDIT>>I know I mentioned this a couple times already  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
Please, make sure you take advantage of the exchange program if you want to play the CD's on your computer
That way you get to download the MP3's almost immediately, you just have to wait for your new CD's

msupdate32.dll is gone and everything seems to be back to normal. I will most definitely be taking advantage of the exchange program. Can you do the following for final cleanup please

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature
Make sure you reenable system restore feature

Afterwards, For added protections
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

You can go back and reenble the protections you disabled earlier with Microsoft AntiSpyware
If you haven't do so yet

SpySweeper is fully functional for a couple weeks from download
After which time you can uninstall it

Another great scanner for malware
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Do that after every update
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process

Stay safe  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
