I'll post the log when its done.

The computer doesn't have a whole lot on it, pretty much the programs we use to run our business.

I think the reason the computer is so slow is because my mother also uses this computer to download pictures from her digitial camera.  We have a TON of pictures on this thing.  I did try deleting all the pictures a year ago, but that didn't make any difference to the system preformance.  For example, when I open "My Computer" its about a 10-15 second wait until the window actually pops up on my screen.

At least this computer pretty much works (besides being insanely slow), our other one the Internet on it (both IE and Mozilla) basically don't work, but this is another thread that I am going to create after I'm done with this one.

Can you try the following for me please

Double-Click on "My Computer"
Click "Tools" >> "Folder Options"
Click the View tab
Un-check [ ] Launch Folder Windows in a separate process
Apply and Ok out of there

Next:
Go to START>>RUN>>type in
cmd
Hit OK

Copy and paste this line in bold just below into the command window when it appears.
To paste, right click in the command window and click paste on the menu

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\WinHound.com /f > delete.txt 2>&1 & Start Notepad delete.txt

This should open a text file called delete.txt
Can you save this please to your desktop by clicking File>>Save As
Choose the Save in too desktop

Then Restart your computer

Back in Windows
Can I see a new hijackthis log and the contents of delete.txt

Let's try and get rid of this key
HKLM\SOFTWARE\WinHound.com\WinHound\WinHound\License* 15/12/2005 7:04 PM 0 bytes Key name contains embedded nulls (*)

Hopefully this tool will find it
Can you download RegDelNull by SysInternals
It's a very small download
Save this and Unzip it only to your C: directory
So you now have 'C:\RegDelNull.exe'

After you have done that
Can you go to START>>RUN>>type in
cmd
Hit OK
At the command window
type in the following

cd c:\
Notice the space after cd
then hit Enter on your keyboard

Now you should be at
C:\>

type in
regdelnull hklm -s
Hit Enter
Notice the spaces after null and hklm
Let it scan for embedded null keys

It should find the Winhound.com key
If it does
Type Y to delete it
Hit Enter

Type Exit
Then Enter

Reboot the computer, any better?

If you mean is it running faster, then the answer is no.

One more run at something, after that I can only suggest it may be time to backup
(If it is a business computer, this should be done regularly anyways)
And then clean install

But can you do the following
Download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

This tool must be run in safe mode

Double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.  Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat.  Follow the prompts.

Reboot back to Normal mode

Post The entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder

Also
Save Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop and double click on it to run.
If prompted by your AV, please let this script run, we are just collecting information

This will create a text file on your desktop
Open the text file and copy and paste the contents back here

NOTE: let silentrunners completely finish, it should prompt when it is done

If you log off your account and log into another user account
Is everything slow too?

Just a couple more logs please if you still want to pursue this

Download F-Secure's BlackLight from HERE and save it to your Desktop.

Locate and double click blbeta.exe to run it - you will need to accept the license agreement.

Click the Scan button to start and then Next when it has finished scanning.(this scan won't take too long)

Let Blacklite rename the malicious files it finds any
If prompted, don't rename wbemtest.exe which is legitimate

The tool will ask if you want to reboot (restart), choose Yes.

A text file, fsbl-date/time, will be saved to your Desktop, copy and paste this into your next post.

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section
Put a check in the following

List all minor sections (full)
and
List empty sections (complete)

Then afterwards click the "Generate startup listlog"

A text file will open
Can you copy and paste the whole contents back here please

They're coming up clean
I'm sorry, but I've ran you through a lot of scans
I don't think the slowdown is no longer malware
Unless I can think of something else

The only other steps we haven't tried

Try going into Safe mode
Is everything still slow?

If you open Task Manager, what is peaking in CPU?

When in safe mode it seems to be running a little faster.  Its hard to tell since I never use this computer except when I'm fixing it.

When I open the task manager, it is going at 1 or 2% CPU usuage, and the only processes using any CPU space is the task manager itself.

Thank you for all your help on this matter.  I think I'll stop bugging you on this.  There is obviously nothing I can do to solve the slowness and I hope that after all fo that the viruses are gone.  Thank you very much for all the help you've given me.

I'm going to look over everything we posted later on
Maybe I'm missing something, but the logs look good

Just by chance
What printer do you have installed?

I was hoping you were going to try some of the suggestions from the Microsoft link to see if it helped any

Quote
When I open the task manager, it is going at 1 or 2% CPU usuage
So if I understand correctly
System idle process is at about 98%
Which is very good

Well I have you here
A bit more cleanup, not sure if it will be any help, but won't hurt

Delete this file if found
C:\WINDOWS\hosts <-Only the one in the Windows folder

Not sure why these scheduled tasks would have to run
ISP signup reminder 2.job
ISP signup reminder 3.job
Appears to be an Internet signup offer, probably set when you bought the computer
Go into the Windows Control panel and open Scheduled tasks
See if they are set to run, if they are disable or remove them

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Ensure to include REGEDIT4 and below in the code box
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop,

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoHTMLWallPaper"=-
"NoAddingComponents"=-
"NoChangingWallpaper"=-
"NoComponents"=-
"NoDeletingComponets"=-
"NoEditingComponents"=-

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry

Reboot the computer

back in windows
Would like to check on one file we rid you of
Download:  Registry Search Tool from this link, it's a very small download
http://billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip and double-click "RegSrch.vbs"
Note: if your Antivirus or another program prompts about running a ".vbs" file, allow the script to run

In the open field copy and paste the below in bold then hit OK

msvcp.exe

Wait for the results and post them back here

I disn't follow any of the advice in the microsoft link because none of it applied to me

I deleted the hosts file.

When I ran the file, this came up in a window. "Search ran in 21 seconds, no instances of msvcp.exe were found"

Why didn't you try anything from Microsoft
Although they don't direct to your printer
It would eliminate a possibility

Did you find it tough to stop the service?

Are you finding it hard to unplug USB devices and restart the computer?

Did you import that registry file?

What about those scheduled tasks

I guess we can stop here then as it seems we've taken this as far as we can go
You may consider backing up important files and folders
and reinstalling

This should get you running up to speed again
