Help with SpamBlockerUtility
« on: December 18, 2005, 09:02:28 PM »
Hello - My kids have stumbled into trouble:  After reading a little here, I decided to  post my HJT file.  Thanks in advance.  Before I read the instructions, though, I checked and deleted the SpamBlockerUtility.  Hope that doesn't make this harder.  This is my -before-  the next post is my -after- logfile.  Again, thanks.

Let's make sure nothing else is hiding

Can you download the following tools please

==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

=Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections

  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other Windows

If you didn't intentionally install Viewpoint
Access your add/remove programs via control panel and remove it
You may have more than one entry
Typically gets bundled with other software

Afterwards
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O16 - DPF: {8C875948-9C60-4381-9248-0DF180542D53} - http://installs.spamblockerutility.com/ins...ckerutility.cab
O21 - SSODL: Mp4owvip - {70933D4D-1BCF-4331-B4AF-F0CEDD1646A5} - C:\WINNT\system32\cfgirole.dll

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Come back here
and post a fresh Hijackthis log
Also include the whole report from Ewido's

Do you have either Ad-Aware Se Personal and/or Spybot 1.4 installed?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

To answer your questions, I do use Adware and spybot.

Oddly, after I performed your recommended steps, I'm having some trouble,  I have to manually start the Wireless software?

thanks

Well Ewido didn't remove nothing legit but bad files and registry entries related to Hotbar

Can you try running the removal tool from Symantec's
See if it picks up anything else

FxHotBar.exe

Save it too your desktop and then close down all browsers
Run the tool
When it's done

Reboot the computer

Don't open a browser yet, instead access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content

If there was a log created from running FxHotbar.exe
Can you post it back here please

Thanks again.  I think the symantec scan found some entries.  The log:

Adware.Hotbar Removal Tool 1.0.5

registry: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-790525478-1580436667-1957994488-1000\Software\ShopperReports (key deleted)
registry: HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-790525478-1580436667-1957994488-1000\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{2178C864-B8BC-41AE-A1FB-EB6A32F87EB1} (key deleted)

C:\Documents and Settings\keller\Application Data\ShopperReports : (directory deleted)
C:\System Volume Information: (not scanned)
D:\System Volume Information: (not scanned)

Adware.Hotbar has been successfully removed from your computer!

Here is the report:

The total number of the scanned files: 22464
The number of deleted files: 8
The number of directories deleted: 4
The number of threat processes terminated: 0
The number of other processes terminated: 0
The number of threat threads terminated: 0
The number of registry entries fixed: 2

The wireless card problem seems to be an anomaly.  Couldn't duplicate that.   The only setting I (re)changed after resetting to IE defaults was to make SlimBrowser my default browser.

I appreciate all you've done.

Sounds good

For added protections
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
Slim Browser is also on this list of browsers as it uses Internet Explorer Engine
See here
http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/idx/9/062/article/

Optional for you too hold onto Ewido
I like having it around

Do you use either Ad-Aware Se Personal and/or Spybot 1.4?
There also great free tools

Nice job.  Thanks.  I just installed Spywareguard, and I regularly scan with adaware & spybot.

Merry Christmas

SpywareGuard is another great tool
But I also hope you installed SpywareBlaster from the link I supplied

Additionally, wouldn't hurt to open Spybot and click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Do this after every update

You have a very Merry Xmas too
