Popcorn72 and Something Else
« on: December 19, 2005, 11:53:39 AM »
I've read other posts and run HT in an attempt to get rid of the Popcorn72.exe.  But I think I have more than just that and can't figure out what is happening.  Any help is much appreciated.

Synapsis:  I did get the Popcorn72.exe trojan and thought I had followed the instructions here in other posts to get rid of it.  I may have, but I think I might have something else with it.  Originally my IE home page was hijacked and a new task bar was added to the IE page.  I've recovered control of IE and got rid of the extra taskbar, but still have other problems.  Currently I still get an unwanted Internet Search Pop-Up on my desktop consisting of multiple ballons for different categories.  I also have Norton System Works 2005 (which did automatic virus signature updates for me and I always ran Norton Anti-Virus in auto-protect mode), Adaware, and Spybot on my computer and have never had any problems with them before.  Now however, if I try to run ANY of them my CPU goes into 100% usage and I can't stop it, and have to "hot reboot" to get back my system.  I also cannot access the Symantec website...I will get re-directed on every attempt.

I'm stumped.  Here's my HT log.  Any help and guidance is greatly appreciated.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it.  Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.  The fix will begin; follow the prompts.  You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.  Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts.  Afterwards, HijackThis will launch.  Please click Scan, and check the following items:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0000CC75-ACF3-4cac-A0A9-DD3868E06852} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0096CC0A-623C-4829-AD9C-19AF0DC9D8FE} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: SearchToolbar - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\utlas.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {E0E899AB-F487-11D5-8D29-0050BA6940E3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] "C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O13 - FTP Prefix:
O13 - Gopher Prefix:

Click Fix Checked.  Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

Reboot your computer again

Finally, please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

So far, so good.  The "Search Balloons" thing is gone from my desktop on bootup.  And Norton System Works and Norton Anti-Virus run fine now without my CPU going 100% and locking me up.

I did notice that both my AdAware and Spybot desktop icons were gone, but in retrospect I "think" I manually deleted both of those programs myself yesterday during my frustration (and being dog tired while trying to fix this thing) with the intent of re-installing them later.  I'm assuming that the procedures I followed above in your recommendation did not remove them?  If so, I'll re-install them again.

One other note:  While waiting for a reply to my original post, I read the "top" post here and tried to run the TrendMicro online malware program (in desparation!).  It had me install the Java Runtime thingie (which I was hesitant to do, but did anyhow), so that is now (I think) showing up in the HJT log if I am reading it right (it wasn't before).  Note I never was able to get the TrendMicro malware check to run.

Here are the requested log files.  If everything looks OK, please advise, and EXPECT a donation for all of your help!

AdAware and Spybot desktop icons were gone
Those were probably just shortcuts to the programs
You can create new shortcuts to the programs, are they in your Add/Remove programs?
"I manually deleted"
I hope you meant uninstalled?
I wouldn't be without Ad-Aware Se Personal 1.06 and Spybot 1.4
If you would like links later let me know

I read the "top" post here and tried to run the TrendMicro online malware program (in desparation!). It had me install the Java Runtime thingie (which I was hesitant to do, but did anyhow), so that is now (I think) showing up in the HJT log if I am reading it right (it wasn't before). Note I never was able to get the TrendMicro malware check to run.
I take it you were trying to run the scan with a browser other than Internet Explorer
In all honesty, I always use Firefox, but have never tried the Java scan with it at Trend Micros
So I always resort to using Internet Explorer to run the scan
Good news is you now have the latest version of Java installed

Can we do a bit more cleanup please
I want to see what else may be hiding

==Download and Install this small program
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please  save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmgqj.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmgqj.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections

  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other Windows

Reboot back to Normal mode
Back in windows

Could I see a fresh Hijackthis log and the complete report from Ewido's

Amazing.  Ewido found 9 more infected objects.  I've never had this happen before with Norton Auto-Protect and Auto-Updates running, and my use of Spybot and Adaware at least 3 times a week.  You are golden, sir!

First (from your previous post), yes, I meant "Uninstalled" instead of "Deleted" in reference to Adaware and Spybot.  I uninstalled them using Control Panel\Add Remove Programs.  I never just delete a folder to get rid of a program.  Sorry about that misunderstanding.  FWIW, I have re-installed both current versions of Adaware and Spybot and they work OK now.

As for the Trend Micro malware program, no, I was using IE and even after installing the Java and Kernal for it from their homepage, I never could get it to run.  Don't know why.

Here are the latest HJT and Ewido logs as requested:

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.  I've been working overtime at my job and couldn't get the programs run until tonight.  Thank you so much for your continued support and guidance.  When this is all over, donation is on the way!

The log looks alright
Do you still have DAP installed? It looks like you removed it
I don't recommend it, but if you removed it

With all other windows closed you can run another scan with hijackthis and fix checked these entries too
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Download with &DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie.htm

O8 - Extra context menu item: Download &all with DAP - C:\PROGRA~1\DAP\dapextie2.htm

How's everything running?
I'm not sure why the scan did that at Panda's if you were using Internet Explorer
I went and ran the scan with Firefox, just out of curiousity
It uses the Java technology for the scan
Took about 40 minutes to complete
It worried me when it switched from Adware scan to the actual virus scan
Left me with 6 hours to complete the scan, but that jumped down to 30 minutes in no time

Just make sure you run an updated scan with Norton's

Let me know of any problems, if any, then we'll do a final cleanup

Yes, I uninstalled DAP and don't plan on using it anymore.  I ran HJT and deleted the two 08 DAP entries you recommended.

Norton System Works and AV are running fine.  I did a full signature update with it then ran a full scan on the 19th after we got rid of the original stuff that was preventing me from running it.  It found 2 items and quarantined/deleted them on the 19th:

Dc175.dll  (Adware.Fastlook)
Dc204.exe (Adware.Livechat)

Since then I have run Norton AV several times and it comes up clean.  My computer seems to be running excellent now.  I am not getting any redirects anymore in IE for the Symantec site or any others (I would get redirects while trying to go to the Lavasoft and Spybot S&D websites that would take me to other 3rd-party Spyware removal sites).

Note:  Just before posting this, I clicked on your "donation" link and it takes me to the PayPal site, but I get a message saying they are "experiencing problems" and to try again later.  I will, as you WILL have a donation coming your way.

Here's my current HJT log after deleting the 2 08 DAP items.  Let me know what other "final" cleanup things you are referring to above we should do yet.

Final cleanup
If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature
Make sure you reenable system restore feature

Afterwards, For added protections
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Additionally, Since you have reinstalled Spybot and Ad-Aware
Open Spybot>>click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Do this after every update
In the same location in Spybot
Put a tick in "Enable Permanent blocking of bad addresses in IE"

Stay safe
and Merry Xmas
