upgrade or New PC
« on: December 20, 2005, 02:41:24 AM »
(I wasn't sure if I had put this in the wrong place... I initially posted in the Tech Clinic...so now I have 2 posts on the same subject, I apologize if I have screwed up.)

Hi guys & gals,

I need help figuring out whether to upgrade or start fresh.

I was hoping I could get away with an upgrade for less $$, but I am not sure how worth it it would be
RAM - I know that I need much more RAM to run the software I want to (Adobe CS, Corel, Macromedia Studio MX), I often need several software pkgs open at a time, and am having issues.
HD - I suspect the solution is to add an addtional higher capacity drive...
Video Card - I don't play games.... so not sure if this is necessary
USB ports - only have 2, so now I am swapping out my external DVD drive with my new USB printer-Grrrrr!
Anything else I don't know that I need?
I downloaded a ultility called Sandra...hoping it would provide you with the info you need to help me out.

I am providing my System Summary, mainboard information, & Windows Memory Information

Sorry if it is too much information........

Thanks!

Wow...I'm certainly not reading all that...you coulda just posted something like:

-Pentium 3 600MHz
-256mb RAM
-Nvidia TNT graphics

I am going to assume that you have the newer socket 370 p3 system. The best you can get on that board is a 1.1GHz Pentium 3...which is terrible. yes, they made p3s up to 1.4Ghz...but they used the Tualatin core...which needs a special motherboard.

So either get a 1.1Ghz Coppermine, or buy a new system.

I would definately recommend a new system.

yer, u can get a new AMD Sempron 3200+ from Compaq for about $700 Australian. I mean, by the time u buy a new motherboard, processor, ram and anything else u might want, u could have just paid 4 a new puter. Just buy a new 1 and kepp ur old and hook the 2 up in a network or sumthin.

For God's Sake, stop using Micro$oft's stuff - it has security like a piece of swiss cheese!
