Randomly Restarting
« on: December 25, 2005, 04:43:50 PM »
My computer seems to be randomly restarting itself. After a few hours of usage it just switches it self off. I thought it would be the CPU overheating because my AMD 2800+ was reaching 60C with the fan on full speed. But ive replaced both the motherboard and the CPU at great cost but the problem is still happening. At the moment im running on a:

AMD 64 3200+
1 GB ram
and windows XP professional

Im also thinking of upgrading to windows x64, would this fix the problem?

Thanks.

You have a spambot on your computer
After we're done getting you clean
You may consider changing all your passwords to emails

For now can you do the following please

==Download Killbox
From one of these loactions
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
and save it too your desktop or folder

I need to see everything running on startup to make sure nothing is hiding in the background
Go to START>>RUN>>type in
msconfig
Under the Startup tab>>Enable all
Under the Gerneral tab>>Select Normal startup

Apply it and close
But Do not restart the computer yet

Start Killbox.exe
Click on TOOLS>>Delete Temp Files
In the "Full path of File to Delete" copy and paste entry below in bold

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll
Next Select "Delete File On Reboot"
Additionally, select "Unregister .dll before deleting"

Then click the Red circle with the White X
Ok the prompt to have Killbox delete the file on reboot
But don't allow to reboot yet
We'll do this manually later

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: msctl32.dll - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctl32.dll

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer
Back in Windows

Can you post a fresh hijackthis log please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can I see a couple extra logs please

Download Trackqoo.zip
Save it to the Desktop

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in the next post

Also, Download Find-Qoologic.zip  and save it to your Desktop.

UNZIP the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic to the desktop

Open the FindQoologic folder.
Locate and double-click the Find-Qoologic.bat file to run it.
Choose option 1  for Run Findqoologic by typing 1 and pressing enter.
This will scan your system.
Wait until a text opens.
Post this in your next reply

Thanks for the logs, I wanted to check if you had WebNexus network installed
But it's not there, I'll include it in the fix anyways

Can you do the following please
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box to notepad, not including the word "code"
Make sure to include REGEDIT4
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop, well need this later, don't run it yet

Code: [Select]
REGEDIT4

Ewido, together with updates scans with Ad-Aware and Spybot should remove some bad files

Can you open Ad-Aware and check for updates
download them if any
Don't run a scan yet

Open Spybot
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Close it, we'll need it later

==Download and Install
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please  save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

You are going to have to follow the next instructions closely without interference

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections

  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other Windows

Double click on fix.reg and allow to add or merge to the registry

Remain in safe mode
Open Ad-Aware
Select to Perform a Smart System scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

Open Spybot
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

Reboot back to Normal mode

Post back the following please
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the report from Ewido's
3. Can you run FindQoologic again with the same instructions and post the new log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Randomly Restarting
« Reply #9 on: December 26, 2005, 02:33:04 PM »
It's looking a little better

One more time please
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open "Delete File on Reboot"
In the File name field
Copy and paste the following path to the file in bold below

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WWKCAI.EXE
Then click the OPEN button
Hijackthis should prompt you that the file will be deleted on Reboot and to restart the computer
Don't restart yet
Do the same for the next ones too

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PPVKU.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FFLWM.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\EEANPOI.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FFCDVSJ.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\VVPQCO.DAT

After you have done that
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/fix_homepage
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
access Internet Options via ControlPanel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content---Also Reset home page

Can you check for updates again with Ewido
Run another complete system scan>>save the report afterwards to your desktop

Can I see one more hijackthis log and again run FindQoologic with the same instructions and post the log
Additionally, post the Ewido report if you managed to finish

« Reply #11 on: December 26, 2005, 10:38:30 PM »
That's looking better, how's everything on your end?

Final cleanup
If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature
Make sure you reenable system restore feature

Afterwards, For added protections
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Additionally open Spybot 1.4
Click the IMMUNIZE button
OK>>Immunize  at the top green cross
Do this after every update

You can go back and disable any entries you had disabled with msconfig if not needed on startup
