Trojan Horse
« on: December 25, 2005, 05:58:37 PM »
Hi,

My mum is having problems with her PC and can't open Internet Explorer long enough to post her own thread before it freezes, so she has sent me her hijack log via email to see if anyone can help.....

"We have run SPYWARE DOCTOR, SPYSWEEPER, AVG ANTI VIRUS, SPYBOT, NO ADWARE, AD-AWARE 6.0 AND XOFTSPY. Some find it and delete it. Others don't even detect it.

HAve turned off System Restore and run programs in SAFE MODE too. The programs can say all is well but then on internet connection, it comes back after about 5 mins where pages begin to load slow and then eventually freeze. Usually AVG ANTIVIRUS detects it first."

Virus name is Trojan Horse IRC/BackDoor.SdBot.NPR

First off, let's figure out which scanners you have purchased
and which ones you plan to keep

SPYWARE DOCTOR, SPYSWEEPER,  NO ADWARE,  XOFTSPY

Out of those above, do you plan on purchasing any of them?
I'm not too keen on No Adware and Xoftspy
If you didn't purchase them
Uninstall them and then reboot your computer

If you didn't purchase SpywareDoctor and don't plan on doing so
Remove it too
SpySweeper, is it the Trial version or the full version?

Post a new hijackthis later so we can see how it looks later
Also, are you controlling anything from running on startup?

We'll get you free tools on your computer to fight spyware

"Virus name is Trojan Horse IRC/BackDoor.SdBot.NPR"
Where is AVG finding this file?

Hi,

"I have uninsalled No Adware, Xoftspy and Spyware Doctor.
I had registered them with a code.
Spysweeper is the full version (also registered with a code).

On startup, I think I have my NOKIA phone program happening and AVG antivirus. How do I check this?

AVG finds the trojan in windows\system32\msnt.exe
When I search for it through explorer, it cannot be located.

I appreciate all your help. Thanks!

Sorry for the delay

Can you do the following please
Download:  Registry Search Tool from this link, it's a very small download
http://billsway.com/vbspage/

Unzip and double-click "RegSrch.vbs"
Note: if your Antivirus or another program prompts about running a ".vbs" file, allow the script to run

In the open field copy and paste the below in bold then hit OK

msgconfigre.exe

Wait for the results and post them back here

Could I also see a startup log from Hijackthis

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section
Put a check in the following

List all minor sections (full)
and
List empty sections (complete)

Then afterwards click the "Generate startup listlog"

A text file will open
Can you copy and paste the whole contents back here please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Hi,

I am sending your replies to my mum via email, and she hadn't replied back to me for the last post you had edited, so I'm guessing she hadn't started working on it yet....

Thanks for all your help. Talk soon.....

Hi,

Mum has been struggling all day to get this done.......she couldn't download the software you asked her to because her PC kept freezing, so I downloaded them and emailed the setup files to her but because she has dial up, the files were too large and outlook express was blocking them or something. Finally she was able to get the software up and running and has completed all the steps, but it has taken all day!

She has asked me to let you know that after the Ewido scan was complete someone else in the household re-started the computer before she had a chance to save the whole report. She has sent me screen shots saved as a word document of the files tha were deleted during the scan. The word document was too large to attach, and I have tried saving it as a GIF, and as a PDF with a reduced resolution/file size, but it is still too big. If it is necessary that you see what was deleted, I will some how get it to you, even if it means I have to type it out! If it is not necessary, please let me know.

Here is the new Hijackthis log:

I'm just on my way to work
So, I won't be back on till later

Can you do the following if she can

Open the Ewido report
I would of liked to seen it all, but the below will do

Ask her to exclude any entries in the report from Ewido's that involve Cookies>>and System Volume information
The latter is the System restore folder, we'll deal with that in a bit

Is it possible for her to send anything but those entries?

Additionally, can we get her too disable a couple running services that supply messenger popups to her machine
This is different than Messenger chat

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Messenger

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
Apply it

Do the same for Alerter

Additionally, even though she is on dialup, at minimum make sure the Firewall supplied in XP SP1 is enabled
This link should walk her through it

<Can't seem to get that link to work>
Can you use this link to Google
Click on the first one to direct her to the proper page to Microsoft instructions
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=Enable...le+Search&meta=

Hi,

Mum has typed out what was deleted during the Ewido scan:

C:\install.exe   Droper.Agent.aed
C:\mc-110-12-0000120,exe    Spyware.Mazifiles
C:\WINDOWS\876029.exe   Adware.Savenow
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gfwfg.dll    Downloader.Small
C:\WINDOWS\system32\scrtkfg.exe    Heuristic.Win32.Morp..
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TFTP2692    Backdoor.Rbot
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows|CurrentVersion\AppManagement\ARPCache\{8A0DCBDA-6E20-489C-904-CE8A0352E75    Spyware.NetNucleus

She has disabled the running services mentioned, and has enabled the firewall

Her PC is still affected by the virus - keeps frezzing etc

Thanks.....

This is going to be tough with you acting as the middle man

By the time we get some parts of the computer clean
She may get reinfected with something else

Can you make sure she open Ewido and check for updates
Under the status window, Ewido last update should read today's date
Don't run a scan yet

I need her to do the following to eliminate a possibility

Download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

This tool must be run in safe mode to work properly if your mother is infected
In safe mode

Double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.  Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat.  Follow the prompts.

Run another complete system scan with Ewido
SAVE the report after to the desktop again

Reboot back to Normal mode

Can I see the following
1. The Ewido report may not be as long, and shouldn't be that big in size
Can I see the whole report please

2. I need to see a fresh hijackthis log

3. Post The entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Can you do the following for me please

You didn't post the Aproposfix report, that was the Ewido report  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
On your desktop should be the Aproposfix folder
Open the folder
Look for log.txt
Open log.txt and click EDIT at the top of the text file
Then SELECT ALL
Then again select EDIT>>>COPY

Come back here and paste that log here please

Additionally, can you open RegSrch.vbs we had you download earlier
In the open field copy and paste the below in bold then hit OK

msgconfigre.exe

Wait for the results and post them back here

Hi again

Found the RegSrch thing.....

Here's the results....
REGEDIT4
; RegSrch.vbs © Bill James

; Registry search results for string "msgconfigre.exe" 31/12/2005 7:03:13 AM

; NOTE: This file will be deleted when you close WordPad.
; You must manually save this file to a new location if you want to refer to it again later.
; (If you save the file with a .reg extension, you can use it to restore any Registry changes you make to these values.)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Webroot\SpySweeper\Startup\id_42]
"Value"="msgconfigre.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Webroot\SpySweeper\Startup\id_43]
"Value"="msgconfigre.exe"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Webroot\SpySweeper\Startup\id_44]
"Value"="msgconfigre.exe"

[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-839522115-362288127-725345543-1004\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU\exe]
"e"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\msgconfigre.exe"

What is that file? Is it the troublemaker?

Actually that's looking pretty good
Just take a look for this exact file name
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msgconfigre.exe <-this exact file name, it should be gone as Ewido found it
and rid you of it, but take a look just in case

Aproposfix came out clean

Can you do  me one last favor please
This may be the trial version of SpySweeper
Before it expires, some of the bad entries found from RegSrch.vbs are found in Spysweepers startup reg. entries
Regardless if this is the trial version or not

Open Spysweeper and check for definition updates
After that is done
In SpySweeper
Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives
Ensure Local Disk C is checked
Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

When prompted, allow Spy Sweeper to restart your computer
or Restart the computer anyways

Back in Windows
Your version of Ad-Aware is very outdated
Can you please access your add/remove programs via control panel and remove AD-AWARE 6.0
Afterwards
Please do the following
Download and Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Click START
Click the radio button to Perform a Full system scan then click NEXT
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer

Back in Windows
Let me know how everything is running so we can do a final cleanup please

Hi again

Cant update Spysweeper cause it is registered with a code from the internet.

Last time I tried to do that the program was suspended.

Have done the adaware thing.

All seems to be clean.

I am so happy!!!!

Is this the end?

Can you do one last thing for me please

Final cleanup
If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature
Make sure you reenable system restore feature

Afterwards, For added protections
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

I'm not sure why SpySweeper won't update
But if it's the trial version, it's no longer needed, can you uninstall it please
Post back a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards

Additionally, now that we have your computer running clean, you are part way to keeping your system secure
You are behind on Windows updates
Service pack 2 has been out for some time now
I realize you are on dialup and it is a big download, but I believe you can still order the CD
Here's a link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...us/default.mspx
It's free to order
After you have SP2 installed, make sure you visit Windows updates and get all other High priority updates
Before installing SP2, make sure you run scans with  Spybot and Ad-Aware and CleanUp! again

What version of Spybot are you running?
Hold onto Ewido
Always keep AVG up to date too
