Battling SpySherrif
« on: January 11, 2006, 05:18:59 PM »
I found SpySherrif on my computer a couple days ago and I have been trying to remove all of the junk installed since then. I have used Trojan Remover, KillBox, win32delfil, FixSpbr, CCleaner, CleanUp40, and ewido. It looks like there is still something on my system installing dll files, but having problems tracking it down. I have included the latest copy of HJ.  I would appreciate any help you can provide.  Thank you!

Can you do the following please

The first thing we have to do is get some  security updates on your computer
Without these updates, infections will probably reoccur

Go to the following link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...1/expresso.mspx

Use the manual download
Install Service pack 1a
Reboot when prompted

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I wish I could install SP1A. I have tried twice over the past year and it crashed my computer both times. I think the problem is that I have a HP Pavilion computer and there are some issues with SP1 and SP2 being intalled on these computers. Any other suggestions?

I have done some more scans and fixes recommended in other postings and I am still finding files installed. The biggest one that I can't delete is browsela.dll. I tried deleting on reboot, I tried unlocking it, but still no luck. It seems like the scanners pick something up new every time.

Here is a list of files that ewido and symantec picked-up today:

Netmon.exe
dcom_12.dll
netpt.sys
A0000060dll
a0000026.sys
A0000049.exe
A0000051.exe
msctl32.dll

I am also posting the latest HJ log.

Another problem-I had to disconnect my infected computer from the Internet because my firewall was detecting emails attempting to be sent out.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!  Thanks!

Using Internet Explorer, go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtote...ws/default.mspx

Go to the following area: Run the Windows Validation Assistant
Click on: Validate Now

While the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.

You will be prompted to install - click YES.

You may need to enter the XP product key, and then click: Continue

When it says Validation Complete, copy what the Assistant reports, and provide it in your reply.

Here is what the validation said when complete:

Thank you for running the Windows Validation Assistant. It appears that your Windows Product Key is valid.

This is a strong indicator that your operating system is genuine, however the Windows Validation Assistant cannot make a final determination.

Can you do the following please
We have to make sure to get some security updates on your computer as soon as possible, but for now

Can you disable Norton's script blocking if it's enabled
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking
   1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
   2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
   3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
   4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
   5. Click OK.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT:  Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! This Fix must NOT be run in safe mode for it to work.

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first and letting me see a log

Ensure you do everything the way I post it!!!!
Download win32delfkil.exe.
Save it on your desktop.
Double click on win32delfkil.exe and install it. This creates a new folder on your desktop: win32delfkil.
Don't run it yet

Download SmitRem.exe by Noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Don't run it yet

==Create a New folder on your desktop, call it Aboutbuster
(Right click an empty spot on the desktop and select NEW>>FOLDER)
Download to desktop About:Buster.zip
by RubbeR Ducky
Unzip it to that new folder so you now have AboutBuster.exe(and included Readme.rtf) extracted to the Aboutbuster folder
Don't run it yet

Print the rest of this out or save too a notepad file on the desktop

You didn't post the whole log from win32delfkil
Can you go back to C:\windelf.txt
Open the log
Select EDIT>>Select all in the top menu bar
Select EDIT>>COPY

To ensure you copy the whole log

Come back here and post the whole log please

That is the entire log that is contained in the text file. Should I run it again or do I need to start to process over?

When the screen says "The computer will remoot immediately. Press any key to continue..." is this when I should turn off the computer with the power button or do I press any key first or close this window first?  Thanks.

Things are looking better
I need you too do the following

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=,

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows

Before enabling any of your Spyware real time protections
Please make a new restore point
Go to start>>Programs>>accessories>>System tools
System restore
Create a new restore point>>Name it and click create

When that's done

At this point, we cleared off a lot of problems from your computer
It's now time to again install SP1a, if not, your in for more problems that may be worse than you already had
Remember, it's SP2 that is not adviseable to install until the system is clean
I want you to install SP1a right NOW!

Go to the following link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...1/expresso.mspx

Use the manual download
Install Service pack 1a
Reboot when prompted

Come back here and post a fresh hijackthis log

No luck with installing SP1A. My computer would not reboot after the install, so I ended up doing a full recovery. I figured at this point, it was just easier to start from scratch. I don't know what was on my machine that wouldn't allow SP1A, but I had no problems installing it after the full recovery. I just have to finish up installing my security/firewall software and any other programs you may recommend to prevent this from happening again. Here is the latest HJ log, so you can verify that the computer is in fact clean.

Well, that's one way to get you clean
I have a feeling it may of been a rootkit, some hidden files that were blocking you
I should of checked for it, but normally, SP1a has no problems installing

I would do the following however
to keep yourself clean

I would reinstall Spybot 1.4 and Ad-aware Se 1.06
Both great programs

*For added protections against future attacks
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
===========================

*Check for updates with your anti-spyware programs and run a check on a regular basis
About every couple of weeks>>ad-aware and Spybot

In addition Open Spybot 1.4
*Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Do the above after every update
===========================
*Keep your Anti-Virus software updated and actively running in the background
===========================
Keep up to date on Windows Updates (HighPriorties)
This includes Service pack 2
This is the most important step in keeping your system secure, it will provide needed security patches
Take a look at this link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
Take note of the link on that page
What to know before you download and install
Afterwards, visit Windows updates and install SP2, may take about 30 minutes or more on cable, dsl

Once installed, reboot the computer
Just a reminder
I recommend you Set to Autoupdate, if not,
make a habit of visiting Windows Updates and check for High Priority updates on a regular basis
This is important in keeping your system secure

Stay safe  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
