My firewall has stopped working
« on: January 16, 2006, 12:54:15 AM »
My firewall ZONEALARM has bit the dust ... I get a message that says .I am missing an important root certificate.
So I uninstalled and deleted every file that I could find with it..except on that said Dbcomm.xml and it was protected. I went into the registry and removed everything that I could find in there that had to with Zonealarm.
I went back to the web and downloaded zonealarm again ...and when I tried to install it ... SAME message.
Ijust recently installed Avast and have never had a problem with ZOnealarm until now.
My computer is terribly slow and seems to be running all the time (like it is trying to load something) any helP????

I don't think you needed to uninstall Zonealarm to fix that error

What makes you think Dbcomm.xml is part of Zonealarm?

Make sure windows is set to show hidden files and folders
I would reboot into safe mode

Delete these folder if found
C:\Windows\Internet Logs <-folder

In the
C:\Windows\System folder
Look for and delete these files if found
VSData95.VxD
VSUtil.dll
VSInit.dll

And the Zonelabs folder if found

Enter the registry, ensure MyComputer is hightlighted
Click EDIT>>Find
Search for  VSData95
If found, right click and delete it

Boot back to Normal mode
Open Your browser and navigate to the following URL.
Once at the web page follow the directions to reset your root certificates.

Don't go uninstalling stuff unless you have too  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Guestolo,

I had already done a major amount of deleting Zonealarm before I read your post this morning.
I promise in the future not to touch anything until I talk to you.
I did everything you told me to and I reinstalled downloaded and reinstalled Zone Alarm... on the first attemp
I still got the message ..... bad security certificate
but the second time it installed okay.
I went to the web address you gave me and all I got was a message that said to manually install click here.
I did that and agreed to what it told me to do .... then it said import was successful.
However I still get the gray security box that ask if I want to go on with loading the web page (several times it ask me this before the pages will load)
I went to windows update to try and do updates from there but it can not scan my computer because
My date and time is not correct... I corrected my date and time ...and it still did not scan for the same reason again.
I have been loosing time just about an hour a day for a while now... today I lost several years it set all the way back Jan 2, 1998.
If this is my CMOS battery..I think I can change it (i have never done that, but I have installed several things on the mother board. I just have to get a new battery. BUt I am afraid of losing wvery thing when I take that battery out to replace it. Will that happen. and do you have any suggestions or instructions before I attempt this?

Definitely sounds like the battery, don't take any chances
Open up the comp.
Find what battery you need and get one installed fairly quick
Simply write down what battery you need
When you have the proper one, remove the old one and replace with the new one

You should be fine
