I've got Alcan.A as Well..Having trouble removing
« on: February 12, 2006, 01:04:00 PM »
With the great help I found here, I went through the procedure to remove the "win32.P2P-Worm-Alcan.a" worm.  However, I had a few blips along the way like not being able to find "C:\Program Files\winupdates", even though I set the folder to display hidden files.  Ewido did find some files in there and cleaned them, but as you will see in my HijackThis log, winupdates.exe still shows up!  Is there a course of action I need to take here?  I greatly appreciate any comments on this.

Hi and thanks for your help.  SpyBot version is 1.4 and latest detection updates was 2006-02-10 (I just did them yesterday after the worm hit me).

Thanks for the info
Can you do the following

Open Ewido, check for updates>>Just in case there are recent ones
Close out later

******************************************************
When I ask you too download a zip file, make sure you choose SAVE TO DISK rather than Open
Can you open "MyComputer"
Double click to open Local Disk C: drive
Right click an empty spot  and left click NEW>>Folder
A new folder will be placed in the C: folder , name it BFU
So you now have C:\BFU

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller
Reminder, choose SAVE rather than OPEN
Then Extract (UNZIP) the contents to the (C:\BFU) folder you just made
So you now have C:\Bfu\bfu.exe

[color=\"#CC0000\"]RIGHT CLICK HERE[/color]
and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download  Alcra Remover.
Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU)
So you now have C:\Bfu\p2pnetwork.bfu
*********************************************************

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

I don't see entries for Alcan, but let's make sure we do the following to ensure your clean

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu

=Open the C:\BFU folder
Double click to run BFU.exe
Use the "Open Script file" button (the folder icon next to Scriptfile to execute)
Navigate to p2pnetwork.bfu in the C:\BFU folder
Right click p2pnetwork.bfu and choose Select
In Brute Force Uninstaller select Execute
Wait for the "complete script execution" box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

==Open Ewido anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
    Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other Windows

Open Spybot 1.4
Run the scan and Fix any RED entries found

Reboot back to Normal mode

Post back all the following
1. Run a "Scan and Save logfile" with Hijackthis and post the fresh log
2. Post the whole report you saved earlier from Ewido's again

OK I am about to do this procedure...the p2pnetwork.bfu saved itself as "p2pnetwork.bfu.txt", do I need to remove the txt extension?

OK, I'm all done:

1) Ewido found no problems (report below)

2) The only red entry found was for "Alexa related", which I never know whether to delete or not because I had heard it is part of IE Explorer (??)

3) HijackThis report below

How's it look?

It would be safe to have Spybot remove the entries related too
Alexa
That's why I was wondering what version of Spybot you are using

What are you using or plan on using for Anti-Virus software, do you need a free solution?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

OK I'll remove the Alexa stuff too...thanks for all of your help!

Until my idiotic move of infecting myself with the alcan worm, I'd been having a pretty good run without antivirus software and running ZoneAlarm as a firewall.  But...now I am thinking about doing something.  If you have thoughts to share that would be great, otherwise I was just going to look into Norton or McAfee.

Cheers,
Ken

Let's do the following

Just some final cleanup from your log

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

Hi, and thanks again for being so generous with your assistance.  My HijackThis report is below.  I find things are running very well now, maybe even quicker than before!

I've got Avast installed, unfortunately it has a conflict of somesort with ZoneAlarm so I may try the other one you suggested instead.  I did a full scan on reboot with Avast and it did not find anything.

Thanks again!
Ken

What conflict is AVAST having with ZoneAlarm, I believe it could just be one of the scanners avast has running that would interfere

Sorry, I can't remember exactly...but avast displayed the warning when I started it up and said that they are working with ZoneAlarm to resolve the conflict.  Something to do with invisible proxy or webshield or something.  The a screen came on advising that I would have to disable this feature in ZoneAlarm, and offered to do so.  That's when I bailed on using it.

One other thing that seems to be happening now is that there is a very long pause before my desktop icons appear.  Quicklaunch all loads up, then just a looooooong pause.  Like a minute or so, with very little hard drive activity.

We may of just had to shut down a couple scanners that didn't need running in Avast
Fairly easy to do

I don't see anything malicious
Can you try the following
See if we uncover anything

==Download and save WinPFind.zip
UNZIP the contents to your desktop
Don't run it yet

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
Open the WinPFind folder you extracted to desktop
Double click on WinPFind.exe
Click START SCAN
Give this some time as it will scan your drive
Close out after

Reboot back to Normal mode

Back in Windows
Post the results of the WindPFind.txt located in the WinPFind folder

Could you also download and save find.zip from below
Unzip it to your desktop, double click on find.bat
A text file will open, copy and paste back the whole contents please

Hey, hope you are still around, I had to leave town on a business trip...I've ran the programs you mentioned.  The idle time before my icons appear after starting windows is still very long...2-3 minutes of just sitting there without any hard drive activity.

First I'll post the winpfind log, which is very large.  The next post will have the find.bat report.

-----------
WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

There's a leftover file from Avast we can clean, won't cause the slow startup however
Find and send this file to the recycle bin
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\aswBoot.exe <-this file, it belonged to Avast

let's clean up a couple entries in your log that may not be needed on startup
Not malware, but unneeded
One entry will return when using Ipod, so not to worry

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MCCInstall] E:\Intro\AA\MCCInstall\English\MCCInstall.exe -Step=9 -Settings
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer

Back in Windows, still no AV installed
Can you do the following please
Do a free online virus scan at Panda's
I'm not sure if Avast ran at 100%
Use Internet Explorer and Run the online Panda ActiveScan
    * Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
    * A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
    * Enter your Country.
    * Enter your State/Province.
    * Enter your e-mail address.
    * Select either "Home User or Company."
    * Click the big Scan Now button.
    * Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
    * Click on Local Disks to start the scan.

When the scan is complete, if anything is found
click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.

Post back a fresh hijackthis log and the full report from Panda's
