Problems with msn messenger
« on: March 03, 2006, 10:18:16 PM »
The other day i tried to open a link that was sent by one of my friends on msn, but it would not open.  Instead it changed my home address in my internet explorer, and when i change it back, it keeps changing. I ran my virus check but it didn't find anything. It's by some DU meter company with ads by mozilla and firefox, so i tried searching for assistance on the web and found a recent posting in your forum.  Prior to my initial posting I tried a few of your suggested programs, but I was not sure if I was doing it right, so its better to start from scratch,

So below is the log file from Hijackthis

I was not sure if I was doing it right, so its better to start from scratch,

Let's start from scratch then
Can you do the following please
Disable Ewido's realtime protection if running as it may interfere with any fixes we try

* Right-click the system tray icon and uncheck real time protection.
      or From within Ewido -
    * Under 'Your security status', if the real time protection is active, deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive'.

Then, from within Ewido:
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Download and Install
Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Close out after it is updated, as we will need it later

Download and save too your desktop FxHotbar.exe
by Symantec's
Don't run it yet

Copy the rest of these instructions too notepad please and save them to your desktop or Print them out!

RESTART your Computer into SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu and hit Enter

In safe mode
Double click on FxHotbar.exe
Then click on Start
Let it finish scanning your computer
Follow any prompts and exit when it's done, remain in safe mode

Access Add/Remove programs via Control Panel and remove the following if found and if you can
My Search Bar
My Web Search
Search Assistant - My Search
Web Savings from Ebates

Find and delete the following folders if found
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch <-folder
C:\Program Files\MyWay <-folder
C:\Program Files\ShopperReports <-folder
C:\Program Files\HbTools <-folder
C:\Program Files\WinFixer 2005 <-folder

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
    Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other Windows

When it's done
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

Problems with msn messenger
« Reply #5 on: March 04, 2006, 01:59:37 PM »
Since the above was performed, my home page hasn't changed, thanks

Just another quick note, it seems that my messenger still stays ahead of all other applications even when I click on them, it started doing this when the other problems started. any suggestions?

it seems that my messenger still stays ahead of all other applications even when I click on them
I'm not really sure what you mean by that
But if you open MSNMessenger, under Tools>>preferences you can disable it from running on startup
I believe on older versions of OE there was also an option to uncheck the start of Messenger when you sign in to your email account
We should get you updated to Service pack 2
But first

Let's do the following please
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Uninstall Manager
If found: Left click to Highlight>>Hotbar ShopperReports
Then click the "Remove from List" button
OK the prompt
Then use the BACK button under "Other stuff"

Do a "SCAN" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare travel rates - {946B3E9E-E21A-49c8-9F63-900533FAFE14} - C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\Bin\1.0.8.0\ShprRprt.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare product prices - {E77EDA01-3C56-4a96-8D08-02B42891C169} - C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\Bin\1.0.8.0\ShprRprt.dll (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis
reboot the computer

Back in Windows

Don't remove Ad-Aware, it's yours for free an to run on a regular basis
Be sure to check for updates before running
A great compliment to Ad-aware is Spybot 1.4
Please run this tool also
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process
Post another hijackthis log please

I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but usually when you click on a window it appears in front of any windows present that are open on your desktop, the only other related description I could find is the following:

"also whenever my msn messenger window is open it is automatically above every other window even if i click on another"

I just want to ensure the following is disabled
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Messenger <-this is not the same msn messenger

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled

Then can you still follow the other instructions I posted please followed by a fresh hijackthis log

I followed the above steps, but I'm having problems fixing the following entries,

O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare travel rates - {946B3E9E-E21A-49c8-9F63-900533FAFE14} - C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\Bin\1.0.8.0\ShprRprt.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare product prices - {E77EDA01-3C56-4a96-8D08-02B42891C169} - C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\Bin\1.0.8.0\ShprRprt.dll (file missing)

I closed all the windows, clicked fix, and when I looked at the log they were still there. I tried once more but got the same results.

Heres the newest  log,

Try this again

Run a Scan with Hijackthis and tick these entries

ALSO:
I think I misunderstood you before
Quote
I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but usually when you click on a window it appears in front of any windows present that are open on your desktop, the only other related description I could find is the following:

"also whenever my msn messenger window is open it is automatically above every other window even if i click on another"

Try this:
Open Msn Messenger>>Click on TOOLS>>Uncheck ALWAYS ON TOP

Problems with msn messenger
« Reply #14 on: March 05, 2006, 06:46:03 PM »
Looks good

*If everything is running better
Final Cleanup
We should clear all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idle
Go to START>>RUN>>In the open field
    Type in
msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer
Back in Windows, Go back and take the check out of "Turn off system restore"
This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point
Protect yourself against Future Attacks
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Keep up to date on Windows updates
This is one of the most important steps in keeping your system secure
If not set to AutoUpdate, make a habit of regularly checking for updates at least once a month
Service pack 2 for Windows has been out for some time
We've done steps to prepare your system for the installation of SP2
Take a look at this link please
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
Take note of the link on that page >>>    What to know before you download and install
Before installing I recommend cleaning your temp files, etc...
Go to START>>RUN>>type in cleanmgr
Hit OK
Also, run the Disk Defragmentor on your system

Don't forget to keep up to date of Microsoft Office updates for security reasons
A link is supplied at Windows updates>>>Office Family

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background

*Make sure your Firewall is enabled and running
A Firewall is very important
This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer without your permission
Service pack 2 for Windows, supplies a firewall that is adequate and enabled by default
Your still use SP1, the firewall is disabled by default unless you enabled it
If you would prefer to use a Firewall which I consider better protection
Take a look at This Link
and install one of them mentioned
ONLY use one software firewall please, more than one will cause conflicts, this includes the one built into SP2

*Check for updates with your anti-spyware programs and run a scan on a regular basis
In addition, Open Spybot 1.4
Click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top green cross
Please immunize after every update

Stay safe  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
