Serious Security Issues
« on: March 14, 2006, 04:23:15 PM »
Hi. I have an ongoing problem with my computer. It seems that I have to run my virus & spyware scan programs (ad-aware, spybot, ewido, norton, panda) every couple of days because my computer starts acting up. Every time a whole bunch of crap is found and removed. Most recently I have noticed that when I use Google about 70% of the times I click on a link I am taken to a different site than listed (usually selling stuff) so I have to actually copy and paste the URL. I don't think this is Google's fault because this issue goes away right after I clean up.

I am not necessarily looking for a specific solution for the Google problem, but rather a way to prevent all this junk from getting on my computer in the first place. Oh--I almost forgot to mention that my computer seems to run (making the noise like something is being loaded) a lot when there is no reason for it to do so.  It just seems as if there must be something in my computer that is allowing it to be accessed or whatever.

Is there anything I can do to make it safer?

Sounds like to me you have some kind of trojan that you cant get rid of,unless you keep going to the same website that installs it to begin with .Even though your A-V an other progs find alot does'nt mean they find it all.More than likly it reinstalls itself soon after you try to remove it

Getting rid of your Web searches being redirected should not be a problem.Download Highjackthis from the pined topic at top of forum read very carefully
how to install this program, and post your Highjackthis log.

You didnt say if you had a firewall on your computer or not,if not then get one .A firewall will help prevent from getting that "junk".If your really paranoid about getting "junk" turn off java,or turn off active X,and dont download free wallpaper or porn .

                                                            Good Luck

How am I supposted to get rid of the trojan if my cleaners don't remove it? And is there any way to tell which website is installing it (if it is an issue of the same site doing it over and over again)?

Also, I do have a firewall and Active X is off--no porn or wallpaper downloads either.

Thanks so much

Can you please try the following and we'll see how your log looks afterwards

==Download CWShredder.exe and save to your desktop, don't run yet

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
Don't run it yet

Save the rest of these instructions to a Notepad file saved to your desktop or Print them out

Please disable Norton's script blocking temporarily as it may interfere with the below fixes
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking

   1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
   2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
   3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
   4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
   5. Click OK.

Close all browser windows, including this one
Find and delete this file if visible
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmiwx.exe <-this file

Run Cwshredder.exe
Click on the FIX button,(Make sure to run the FIX and not the Scan, the scan won't do nothing)
let it run and fix whatever it finds
When it's done
Exit
Don't reboot yet

Instead
Double click on Fixwareout.exe
Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.  You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.  Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

One Note: ONLY if you have trouble with your Internet connection afterwards
Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.  Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.  Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.  Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Sorry for the delay, that looks fine
Can I have you do the following please

Go to either of these links
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
or
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Use the browse button and navigate to this file on your hard disk
C:\WINDOWS\System32\CSIAS.EXE<--this file

Right click on the file and choose Select
Then use the Submit button
Let it finish scanning
Could you post back the results of the scan back here please

Could you also post a fresh hijackthis log, just want to make sure it still looks good

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Go ahead and delete that file please
If you could post one more hijackthis log to ensure your still clean, that would be great
Then we'll just do some final cleanup procedures
Thanks

That looks good
Here's my normal recommendations after clearing an infected log

*If everything is running better
Final Cleanup
We should clear all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idle
Go to START>>RUN>>In the open field
    Type in
msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer
Back in Windows, Go back and take the check out of "Turn off system restore"
This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point
Protect yourself against Future Attacks
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background

*Check for updates with your anti-spyware programs and run a scan on a regular basis
Ensure you have the latest versions of Ad-Aware SE 1.06 and Spybot 1.4
In addition, in Spybot
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Please Immunize after every update

*Keep up to date on Windows updates
This is the most important step in keeping your system secure
In addition: If you have Microsoft Office installed
Make sure you keep up on security updates
You will find a link at Windows Updates named "Office Family"

*Make sure your Firewall is enabled and running
A Firewall is also very important
This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer without your permission
