please help with win32.P2P-Worm.Alcan.a
« on: April 14, 2006, 01:10:38 AM »
Hi, I have completed the first few steps that you provided and attached is my log. I have run Ad-Aware several times and cannot remove Win32.P2P-Worm.Alcan.a.  I'm using my sons laptop (as mine is broken - won't connect to the net) and now his is beginning to have problems. Stops working, won't shut down, etc. Is this from this worm?

Thanks,

Sue

Oh... here is the log

« Reply #1 on: April 14, 2006, 01:34:45 PM »
Can you do the following please
Can you open "MyComputer"
Double click to open Local Disk C: drive
Right click an empty spot  and left click NEW>>Folder
A new folder will be placed in the C: folder , name it BFU
So you now have C:\BFU

Please download Brute Force Uninstaller
Reminder, choose SAVE rather than OPEN
Save this too the desktop
Once you have it saved too desktop
Then Extract (UNZIP) the contents to the (C:\BFU) folder you just made
So you now have C:\Bfu\bfu.exe

RIGHT CLICK HERE
and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download  Alcra Remover.
Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU)
So you now have C:\Bfu\alcanshorty.bfu

Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

Close down all browser windows, including this one

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done click Close
Decline to log off or restart the computer

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winupdates] C:\Program Files\winupdates\winupdates.exe /auto
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/MediaAcc...e/bridge-c9.cab
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

=Open the C:\BFU folder
Double click to run BFU.exe
Use the "Open Script file" button (the folder icon next to Scriptfile to execute)
Navigate to alcanshorty.bfu in the C:\BFU folder
Right click alcanshorty.bfu and choose Select
In Brute Force Uninstaller select Execute
Wait for the "complete script execution" box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Use Internet Explorer and Run the online Panda ActiveScan
    * Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
    * A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
    * Enter your Country.
    * Enter your State/Province.
    * Enter your e-mail address.
    * Select either "Home User or Company."
    * Click the big Scan Now button.
    * Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
    * Click on MyComputer to start the scan.

When the scan is complete
click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.

I need to see the following please
1. Post the report from Panda's
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log

Ok....I'm finally done!

I think it went well except for one thing (problem)? When I ran the customn clean-up , * Delete Prefetch files was not an option to be checked. It was there, but wouldn't allow me to check it.

When I ran the customn clean-up , * Delete Prefetch files was not an option to be checked. It was there, but wouldn't allow me to check it.
Don't worry about Prefetch, that folder is found in Windows XP
Forgot to remove it when I copied and pasted that reply to you

I missed one entry earlier,
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DBBB88F3-D9D3-43F1-AEDC-0F01BDED8A27} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\PROSITEFINDER\PROSITEFINDER.dll

Before we fix it

Open Hijackthis.exe
Open Misc tools section
Open Uninstall Manager
Click the SAVE LIST.... button
Save the list too your desktop then copy and paste the contents of the list back here please

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DBBB88F3-D9D3-43F1-AEDC-0F01BDED8A27} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\PROSITEFINDER\PROSITEFINDER.dll

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Can you access your add/remove programs via control panel and remove the following
Surf Accuracy
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint Media Player

Reboot the computer after all are removed

Back in Windows
Can you find and delete the following files below in bold
C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys

and the following folders:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\PROSITEFINDER
C:\WINDOWS\Favorites\SHOPPING

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete

FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process

Post back a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how everything's running please
Also let me know if you were able to delete all those files and folders

Do you know what this entry in your log is related too?
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Boot] C:\Program Files\MartialHeroes_2.0\XTrap\XTrapM2S.exe

Also: I seen this in your first Hijackthis log
C:\PROGRAM FILES\LAVASOFT\AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL\AD-AWARE.EXE
Did you uninstall Ad-Aware?
Was it the latest version?
It's a very good program, let me know please

Here is the new HJT log.

I couldn't find this: C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ysbactivex.dll, but the Spybot program did and I did delete it from there. Will that work?

I have no idea what this is: O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Boot] C:\Program Files\MartialHeroes_2.0\XTrap\XTrapM2S.exe

Could it be from a game? My 17 year old son plays a lot of games.  He just came home - said it is a game, but he doesn't need it. A friend was playing it.

Ad-Aware is still there - I just opened it from my desk top.

The computer seems to be working better, it has not quit working at all!

Yes, that will work, if not, I would of had you register a .dll so you could view all files in the Downloaded Program Files
But Spybot nabbed it

I don't see that game in your uninstall list
C:\Program Files\MartialHeroes_2.0\XTrap\XTrapM2S.exe
Is there an uninstaller via Start>>Programs?
Or can you navigate too C:\Program Files\MartialHeroes_2.0 and see if there is an uninstaller?

Regardless of what you find
Can you do some final cleanup please

We should clear all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idle
Follow the link to disable system restore
Follow the instructions to disable system restore
1. Click Start, Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon. The System Properties dialog box appears.

NOTE: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.

3. Click the Performance tab, and then click File System.
4. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.
5. Click OK.and then click Close.
DON'T Reboot the computer yet

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Boot] C:\Program Files\MartialHeroes_2.0\XTrap\XTrapM2S.exe

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Now Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
Go back and reenable system restore
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click System, and then click the Performance tab.
3. Click File System, and then click the Troubleshooting tab.
4. Uncheck Disable System Restore.
5. Click OK.# and then click Close.
# Click Yes to restart.

Can you do the following to increase security on this computer
Protect yourself against Future Attacks
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Check for updates with your anti-spyware programs and run a scan on a regular basis
Ensure you have the latest versions of Ad-Aware SE 1.06 and Spybot 1.4
In addition, in Spybot
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross
Please Immunize after every update

*Keep up to date on Windows updates
This is the most important step in keeping your system secure

*Make sure your Firewall is enabled and running
A Firewall is also very important
This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer without your permission

Your running an outdated version of Java
I suggest that you do the following
access this link
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
I find the
Windows (Offline Installation) the most reliable although it's a bigger download
Save the offline installer to desktop
Go into the Windows control panel and double click to open the Java Icon
Under the General tab>>Delete Files>>Ok the prompt
Close Java and access your add/remove programs
Remove
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1

Afterwards, Install the latest version of Java you saved to desktop
This will help to plug security holes

I usually also include the below
*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background
I noticed you don't have any Anti-Virus software installed on this computer
If you don't have your own to install
I suggest that you install the free version of AVG
You can find the link at this page
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
On that page, scroll down and save the installer to your desktop
AVG Free for Windows installation files
File   Version
avg71free_385a729.exe <--this link, or similiar

Double click to install once you have it saved to desktop and follow the prompts to install
Make sure AVG is right up to date and run a complete system scan
Reboot the computer afterwards

Can you post back on last final Hijackthis log after you have done the above please
Let's make sure it still is clean  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

NOTE: I also suggest that if you haven't run the Disk Defragmentor on this computer in some time
Now would be a good time to do it
I find it best to be done in safe mode, with all power options in your display properties set to Always on
Defragment could take awhile if it hasn't been done in awhile

Also:
You said this earlier
Quote
I'm using my sons laptop (as mine is broken - won't connect to the net)
Is this because of Spyware or Malware?
Or is this hardware related?
If it may be related to Spyware or Malware, can you transfer Hijackthis.exe from this computer
either by floppy, cd, or Usb thumbdrive
Copy it over to the other computer and save it too it's own folder on the harddrive
We can fix that one up later after you post the new log from this one

I posted just before you did  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
Can you follow my last recommendations and then post a new log please

Also, I find that Google toolbar does a great job of preventing those everyday normal popups
Do you need Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition installed also?
Two tools doing the same job, I'll leave that decision to you and your son
